GA Review

[edit]

Hi, I'm reviewing this article for GA. I'll have a detailed review ready for you tomorrow. Bláthnaid talk 19:38, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks. Derry Boi (talk) 19:51, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose quality:
Well written and easy to read.
    B. MoS compliance:
There are some issues with the lead section and GAA terms, which I'll explain below.
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. References to sources:
    B. Citation of reliable sources where necessary:
    Issues listed below
    C. No original research:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
Muldoon's career is covered comprehensively, but there is no information about his personal life apart from the infobox.
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
Praise for Muldoon is mentioned in the article, but you've also covered his suspension.
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are copyright tagged, and non-free images have fair use rationales:
    B. Images are provided where possible and appropriate, with suitable captions:
    Issue explained below.
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
It's great to see a GAA article nominated for GA, but there are some issues to be addressed before the article can pass the review.

Issues that need to be addressed before the article can pass the review:

  • Image in the infobox: this photo is blurry and is just of his back. I realise how difficult it is to find free images, but I think the article would be better if that image was removed from the infobox.  Done
  • Lead section: the third paragraph has information that is not repeated in the main body of the article. Generally, the lead should just be a summary of information already included in the main body of the article. I think this paragraph would be more suitable at the very beginning of the "football career" section, and you could then summarize the paragraph in the lead.  Done
"He finished the 2006 campaign with 1-07 (10) from two matches." -- I would repeat this at the very end of the second last paragraph of the inter-county section as it links in with his injury and Derry leaving the championship. Done
  • Personal life: the only information about his personal life is in the infobox. There needs to be some information about his personal life to meet #3(a) of the good article criteria. It doesn't need to be a lot of information, just a couple of sentences.
  • GAA scoring: there needs to be an explanation of the GAA scoring system the first time it is mentioned for people who are not familiar with it. See this part of the Peter Canavan article for an example of how this can be done.  Done
  • Club section:
The first paragraph in this section has no sources.  Done
The first 2 sentences of the second paragraph are not sourced.  Done
The sentence "which they won defeating Tir Chonaill Gaels (London) in the quarter-final, Rathnew (Wicklow) in the semi-final and Nemo Rangers (Cork) in the final." is not sourced.  Done
In the third paragraph "Ballinderry defended the Derry Championship in 2002, but lost in the semi-final stage of the Ulster Club Championship to Errigal Ciarán." is not sourced.  Done
"Muldoon also helped New York club Westmeath reach the semi-final of the New York Senior Football Championship in 2000, but they were defeated by the Kerry club." is sourced to [1] but the source does not mention anything about the 2000 championship.  Done
All of the fourth paragraph without sources.  Done
  • Province section: you have a question mark instead of a value here.
  • In the honours section there are numerous question marks and the end of the section says "Note: The above lists may be incomplete. Please add any other honours you know of." Could you remove/replace these?
  • There is a question mark in the infobox for his years at Ballinderry  Done
  • The following references have retrieval dates. Are any of them available online?
number 1 "McGrane set for '60'", Gaelic Life; #5 "Happy days here again!", Gaelic Life; #7 Shannon, Kieran; Leo McGeough (2008-06-15). "When Sunday Comes - Stevie from Killeavy: Ulster's top predator", Sunday Tribune; #11 Heaney, Paddy (2008-03-27). "Enda keen to beat clock for honours", The Irish News; #12 O'Kane, Karl (2007-05-30). "Enda chasing final chance", Irish Daily Star.  Done
  • Reference #36 "082540.jpg" the external link is dead.  Done

I'll put the GA nomination on hold for seven days so that the issues can be addressed. Please let me know if I can clarify or help with anything. Bláthnaid talk 21:21, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Follow up: The article is much improved, and there are just a couple of things in the above list left to do. In addition, in the infobox, instead of "199x-Present" for Muldoon's years at Ballinderry, I think that something like "mid 1990s-Present" would be better (if it is the mid 1990s).
Were you able to find any information about Muldoon's personal life? There is a discussion at the GA nominations talk page about this issue, and there doesn't appear to be consensus that there has to be personal information in an athlete's article. I've been looking at similar GA articles, and not all of them have this information. Because of this, I won't fail the GA nom if you can't find sources with personal information.
I can keep the nomination on hold a little while longer if you need a few more days to finish editing the article. Bláthnaid talk 13:17, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I'd appreciate it if you gave me another couple of days Bláthnaid, been busy lately. Thanks. Derry Boi (talk) 21:06, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Just leave me a note when you are ready. Bláthnaid talk 16:52, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok think I'm finished, just a few things:
  • There's not really anything citable for personal information out there as far as I can see.
  • I'm not really sure what to do with the question mark in the province section. Muldoon has definetly won at least three Railway Cup medals (2003, 2004 and 2007), but its also possible he was on the 1998 or 2000 panels. I can't find a source to confirm this though. Should I just leave the question mark or what do you recommend?
  • As for the honours sections, I've removed all the question marks, except for the aforementioned Railway Cup. About the note at the bottom, it is possible that not all honours are included, so I thought it might be best to leave in case other users want to add any more. However I'm 99% all major honours are included, so I could just remove it if you want?

Derry Boi (talk) 00:53, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article looks really great, thanks for all your hard work. I've given the article a quick copyedit. There is just one small issue left before I pass the nomination:
  • The sentence "The league success saw Derry become many people's favourite to win the Ulster Championship and one of the top few for the All-Ireland." does not have a reference. Could you add a reference? (or you could remove the sentence entirely)
To answer your other points:
  • As I mentioned above, it's OK if you can't find personal info.
  • For the Railway Cup, I put "has won the Railway Cup a number of times, including in 2003, 2004 and 2007." instead of the question mark. I think this is OK.
  • I removed the note at the bottom of the honours section.
I should also mention why I changed a couple of sentences in the article:
  • "Many say his best attribute is his vision and ability" -- I changed this to "Muldoon has been praised for his vision and ability" because the source didn't support the "many" part.
  • I removed "Derry again lost to Galway, in a game they really should have won." because this information wasn't in the source cited.
  • I removed "for years" from "Muldoon underwent surgery on a knee that had been troubling him for years." because the source says "some time". Bláthnaid talk 13:37, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great, I'll promote the article to Good Article status. This is one of the best GAA biographies on Wikipedia, so kudos Derry Boi. Bláthnaid talk 08:48, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
