hello! Who in england or in the us is intersted in seargents of the german army 60 years ago? Why was Barkmann given such an article in english??

It's easy to sign your name you know, use four tilde marks. It may surprise you to know how many people are interested in military history, plus Barkmann was an accomplished tank commander, or is it suddenly Wiki policy to cover only the highest rankers? Barkmann was also a holder of several high decorations including the Knight's Cross which is pretty damned impressive. Update: I just looked at the Feuerwehr-Kisdorf site you listed above. Saw the photo and 1981 remarks under the "history" page. My German is very rudimentary - but I do not see a word for "died" or anything ("gestorben" or some such in German)...I think the caption may simply say he retired... I've also looked at a number of sites including Achtung Panzer, no info available, so I'd say its possible he's still living. I think it will be notable when a Knight's Cross holder dies, even if in Germany there might be no official commemeration. Douglasnicol (talk) 21:54, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He is still alive - he subsequently became major of his hometown and is a politician (Christian Democratic Union) in retirement.

Have a look at the website of feuerwehr kisdorf: according to the history part of the site, barkmann died in 1997.

I think this is in reference to his son (who was also named Ernst Barkmann). His (the father's) name is now Ernst Schmuck-Barkmann.
