Cryptozoological connection[edit]

For interest, this snake was suggested by Russian zoologist Yuri Gorolev as being the creature behind stories of the Mongolian death worm, aka Olgoi-khorkhoi. In 1983 Gurolov reported that during his Gobi expeditions of the 1970s, local inhabitants identified a specimen of the snake as being the Olgoi-khorkhoi. His account is mentioned in the 2017 publication (translated as) The Amphibians of Mongolia by S. L. Kuzmin et al.

The Mdw article has two cited references for this (in Russian, which I cannot myself read, but see also from about 5:45 in this YouTube video by Ben G. Thomas.
