EHRC "independent agency"?? Please.[edit]

Reference is needed to say that EHRC is an independent agency. All international media refer it to as the Ethiopian government run Human Rights Commission. And to the contrary actually, EHRC is widely known to be a NOT an independent agency. If there is a credible, "independent" source that says EHRC is an independent organization, please share it. Until then, at least says, it is an organization that claims to be an independent agency. Loves Woolf1882 (talk) 08:55, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is an important question. The independence of national human rights agencies from governments, political parties, corporations, or other groups and powerful individuals who tend to be responsible for human rights violations or abuses is usually set by legislation, but has to be empirically judged in practice. Sourced information from a variety of sources about the evolution of any particular national human rights agency, as in this case, is the only way to get encyclopedic coverage of the issue. Just to repeat the obvious: the degree of genuine independence of a national human rights institution from legislative, executive, judicial and media and corporate powers depends partly on legislation but also on actual norms and practices within the institution and the degree to which its funding and administration are independent of its actions and the degree to which it is afraid that itself or its members may be persecuted by national authorities and the degree to which its software and local/remote computers are independent of all the national and international powers that may wish to control it. We can get info on formal definitions from official sources, and info on actual norms and practices from secondary sources. A lot of this info may be underreported - Wikipedia can't solve that problem; investigative journalism can try to report on that. See WP:RS. Boud (talk) 01:43, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
