chinese traders

[edit]

The presence of Chinese traders in Mongolia is quite well-documented at least from the end of the 19th century on, see for example http://www.iras.ucalgary.ca/~volk/sylvia/Pozdneyev.htm . Before that, one would probably have to look for Russian and Chinese sources, but I think it is fair to assume that they didn't appear out of the blue.

I'll try to find a reference for the number of settlers in the early 20th century.

One open question (at least for me) is whether the Chinese traders in Mongolia usually really settled there for good or whether they just stayed until they had saved some money and then returned back home. The part of taking Mongolian wifes seems to imply the former, but it is not much more than one hint IMO. Yaan 18:38, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No definite source for numbers found, but Pozdneyev gives a number of 1800 for the Maimaicheng near Khüree (see link above). I'll therefore change numbers from 'several' to 'some' ten thousand. Given that he doesn't mention the season his number refers to, but mentions strong seasonal fluctuations in the number of chinese merchants in Mongolia, some ten thousand doesn't sound too far off as a number for the whole country.
C.R. Bawden's Modern History of Mongolia from 1968 also contains a discussion of Chinese trade in Mongolia on p.94-100. Yaan 18:43, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Found a source: T.E. Ewing, Ch'ing policies in Outer Mongolia, in: Modern Asian Studies 14, vol1 (1980), p.147. He estimates perharps 10,000 for Urga, 2,000 or so in Uliastai and Khiagt, and somewhat less in Khovd. Yaan 12:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inner Mongolians

[edit]

Mr. Bulag writes that from one group of illegals deported in 1995, more than 50% were Inner Mongolians. I don't think this says much about the situation in 2010. Yaan (talk) 13:41, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
