Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on January 27, 2021.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman has been credited with having "saved American Democracy" on January 6, 2021?

Is he notable?

[edit]

[talk]:: American Citizen interested in preserving US History = Unless Eugene Goodman (police officer) has expressed his desire for a page or mention of his Heroic actions on January 6, 2021 in the Capitol building not exist, I believe a page Highlighting his role in a part of American History should remain available. I don't understand how Wikipedia defines page content but, if necessary, perhaps a mention of His Heroism should be included under another Topic such as "List of Capitol Police Officers who have received the Congressional Gold Medal"? Either way, His actions are a part of United States History and therefore deserving of recognition. Perhaps prior to any Editors decision, Eugene Goodman (police officer) could be contacted and asked his opinion? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.75.24.139 (talk) 19:05, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like this might be WP:BLP1E. –Novem Linguae (talk) 00:02, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In borderline notability case, it might be taken into consideration that the attention appears unwanted by the subject: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/goodman-capitol-police-video/2021/01/13/08ab3eb6-546b-11eb-a931-5b162d0d033d_story.html. Innisfree987 (talk) 00:06, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
He has expressed some apprehension about being targeted by extremists but I have not ready any comments wherein he says he wants to be left alone. Cbl62 (talk) 00:37, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Given the subject's security concerns, we should ensure that no details are provided here with respect to where he lives or his family situation. Probably date of birth should be avoided as well. Cbl62 (talk) 16:16, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, he is not notable and these AfDs should have been closed as Delete per WP:BLP1E. But there has been a rush by some to create and maintain articles about all individuals linked to the 1/6 attacks, and while most have resulted in deletes and redirects, others have resulted in inconsistent results like this article. See the discussion at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Individuals, like Jake Angeli, who were connected to the 2021-01-06 attempt to seize the US Capitol building.--Darryl Kerrigan (talk) 20:18, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seems pretty clear to me that an acting Deputy Sergeant at Arms of the Senate of the United States Senate is notable. Not to do an WP:NCTest, but the other recent Deputies have pages too. Gershonmk (talk) 01:28, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Two Points

[edit]

Disambiguation - presuming this entry survives the test of notability, a disambiguation will be needed, as there is another Eugene Goodman entry

"He was previously a detective with the New York Police Department." I have seen no reference to this anywhere, except here. I'm wondering if someone picked up the text 'Former NYPD Detective ...' from the Washington Post headline on a video in which a former NYPD detective (not Officer Goodman) offers commentary on Officer Goodman's actions? Irish Melkite (talk) 11:13, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I removed the unsourced line. Innisfree987 (talk) 13:21, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that was my mis-reading of the initial coverage. Thanks for catching and fixing this. Cbl62 (talk) 00:37, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Being "Color Blind"

[edit]

Eduardo Bonilla-Silva. "Not seeing" color denies systemic racism! Eugene Goodman, a Black man, insulted and poked the Capitol building white supremacists terrorists, so they’d chase him instead of entering the Senate chamber. --93.211.220.144 (talk) 22:46, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible it worked because these white supremacists fantasized of chasing a black man like their racist heroes in the South used to? --93.211.223.45 (talk) 00:10, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • ... that Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman has been credited with having "saved American Democracy" on January 6, 2021? Source: here: "It is not hyperbole, exaggeration or an opening pitch of a TV movie ... to say that Eugene Goodman saved American Democracy on Jan. 6, 2021."
    • ALT1:... that Eugene Goodman has been called as an American hero for having "single-handedly prevented untold bloodshed" by diverting a "mayhem-minded" mob away from an unguarded door to the Senate? Source: here: "Eugene Goodman is an American hero. At a pivotal moment on January 6, the veteran United States Capitol Police officer single-handedly prevented untold bloodshed. Staring down an angry, advancing mob, he retreated up a marble staircase, calmly wielding his baton to delay his pursuers while calling out their position to his fellow officers. At the top of the steps, still alone and standing just a few yards from the chamber where senators and Vice President Mike Pence had been certifying the Electoral College’s vote, Goodman strategically lured dozens of the mayhem-minded away from an unguarded door to the Senate floor."

  • This article is new enough and long enough. The hook facts are cited inline and I prefer ALT0, as ALT1 seems a little "over the top". The article is neutral and I detected no copyright issues. A QPQ has been done. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:48, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mitt Romney video

[edit]

We need a bit on the Mitt Romney video, though I'm not sure where to put it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gershonmk (talkcontribs) 22:12, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Gershonmk: I inserted a sentence. Feel free to expand, modify, or move as appropriate. Cbl62 (talk) 23:05, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What's his rank?

[edit]

Apologies in advance if this topic comes across as a forum topic, but I feel there's a conflict of his rank. While this article states he served in the army, having attained the rank of Sergeant, in this clip from 1:45 the announcer at the inauguration calls him out by one of his titles as "Private 1st Class", but there is no mention of this rank in his article. Is there any mention in any form of this on this article, or has it been misrepresented/stated wrong? I'm confused. -- Tytrox (talk) 19:39, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: Ok I think I've answered my own question, just by navigating to the United States Capitol Police article, and there it has a list of ranks, with "Private First Class" being one of them. So that explains that... but it should then be noted on the article, no? -- Tytrox (talk) 19:48, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Description of the insurrectionists is too nice

[edit]

Ashley Babbitt was an insurrectionist who was shot trying to force entry into the house chamber. She wasn't "approaching" the chamber like a tourist, she had smashed thr glass and was halfway through the bloody door already. Could the editors please discuss this interpretation of what happened? Because the rest of the English-speaking world thinks Americans are too afraid to describe these people accurately, and it's especially upsetting to see such soft-pedalling on the page of this absolute legend. 192.0.182.43 (talk) 19:01, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • You have to discuss this in the context of, and on the basis of, what the sources say--that's what we do here. If the sources phrase it differently than the article does, adjustments can be made. Drmies (talk) 19:02, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
