Gold and Silver euro commemorative coins (Austria)

Hello there! The article is great, or rather, going to be. Both in terms of excellence and in size, as it is already ridiculously big. I recommend that it is moved into it's individual page, as Austria, or a title akin to the one in the Subject line. I'm not sure about the inclusion of "market price", as that is one of the most volatile aspects of any coin, and it can easily get outdated. Are you willing to keep a check on that once you create the page? I don't think so. Also, the descriptions of the coins are great, but again, quite lengthy. As this page is interesting to numismatics, standardisations and shorter descriptions are adequate. Otherwise an all round brilliant article.George Adam Horváth (talk) 15:20, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks for your compliments. I am kind of thinking into splitting it as you mentioned. I was waiting to finish with Austria (which by the way I think is the country with the majority of these coins, other countries do not mint as many as they do) to see what this will turn into.
With regards to the market price, I would leave that to people that have interesting in numismatics and collections. If the prices are put with references to the sites or shops that sell them, I think is great information, regardless that it is outdated or not. Let's see what happens. I will be updating this portion as I continue collecting these coins, however, I still have a long way to go. But aonce gain, thanks a lot of your positive comments. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Miguel.mateo (talkcontribs) 00:07, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Ireland

I do believe that their are no Euro Gold & Silver Commemorative coins missing from the list. (up to and including 2007)Kevin hipwell (talk) 00:41, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Kevin, thanks a lot for helping in getting this done. What do you think about creating a Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Ireland) similar to Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria) or Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium)? Considering you already have all the information ... Miguel.mateo (talk) 01:14, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Under Ireland the sentence the only one bimetal using another materials is not quite true, the coin is not actually bimetal but it is an alloy, the red and green on the coin is a paint like substance not a metal.

Gotcha, will fix it in a second. Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Done, and I am going home, let's see what progress you can do in one hour while I commute :)) Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:56, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

I've been up all night its so I'm gunna sleep now lol.Kevin hipwell (talk) 10:02, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

France

I have put up a list of Gold & Silver Commemorative coins however the list only contains that which I could find on the monnaie de paris website if someone knows where i can find an TRUE EXTENSIVE list I will do the effort of putting them on this page.Kevin hipwell (talk) 00:41, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Also if anyone can tell me where I can find the Date of Release of the coins I will add that too Kevin hipwell (talk) 00:44, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Face-lift

I think we should dramatically change this article as the more detailed articles (such as the "Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria), (Belgium), (France) & (Ireland)") convey the message of each section more effectively and efficiently. also if we continue building this article using the current method I feel it will become to big and uglyKevin hipwell (talk) 17:53, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Although I would not like for this article to be reduced to a simple list of links perhaps we can instead have this article give a brief intro to each of the respective country's authoritative body's responsible for the release of Euro gold and silver commemorative coins & also provide the links to the more detailed articles.Kevin hipwell (talk) 17:53, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

I am inclined to agree with you. Maybe keep the same format for the other countries, since they do not mint too much and is valuable info. As for France, I would leave just a paragraph explaining the number of issues and potentially one table that says the number of coins issued per year, with references of course to the main article. I've been tied up with work, had not have time to keep moving, but eventually I will. I also would like to review the format of your new articles (France and Ireland), I think some html details may be missing. Miguel.mateo (talk) 23:50, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Gold and Silver?

why only gold and silver comm coins and not all the euro comm coins except the 2eur comm??? --Melitikus (talk) 20:12, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Gold and silver is the title of the article, but all non-2-euro coins are represented here. Check Slovenia 3 euro and Austria 25 euro fro example. Miguel.mateo (talk) 23:55, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

so the title is misleading, Euro Commemorative Coins would be better--Melitikus (talk) 08:13, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

and how about near the Face Value put a column with the Issue Price - usually these 2 are different from each and this info would be very useful for the collectors--Melitikus (talk) 08:17, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Melitikus, let me see how can I put your requested information in the layout, however I am having a huge problem thinking where will I be able to get that information for all the coins already minted. The majority of the "Market Value" is the value you are requesting. Have you seen the detailed article for each country like Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium) for example?
About the name of the article, I kind of agree with you. The only exceptions (so far) are the Austrian 25 euro (4 coins) and the Slovenian 3 euro (1 coin). Since changing the name of the article(s) (you might now there is articles for each country with more details) will be a huge trouble (we will get into copyright protections issues for the images of all coins, and they will need to be solved one by one, you can imagine how difficult that would be) I think that for just 5 exceptions out of hundreds coins should be OK. I have put a sentence in the beginning of the article that it also covers some rare cases of other materials.
What do you think? Miguel.mateo (talk) 13:22, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
The idea of having an issue price is good for reflecting the worth of the coin & although this information is available by most mints the older coins such as those issues in 2002 etc no longer contain issue prices on the websites, also the mints can sometimes offer discounts on there products so what issue price should then take priority.
I think you have some good ideas Melitikus however I would be reluctant to accepts adding further information on yet not complete articles, perhaps when the articles are all finished and fixed up and ready to soak up new information we can add issue price.
In short- I like your idea but it will be extra work on the articles and I for one feel the benefit/work ratio is not high enough atm.Kevin hipwell (talk) 15:01, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

im sure that collectors would help in giving the issue price, for example the Maltese BU set 2008 has a face value of only 3.88EUR but the sales price from the bank was 35EUR - of course on ebay and other sites will be much more but im asking to quote the price from the bank - in Malta when the bank issue a coin let say in 2004 the face value of the Malta joining the EU comm coin was Lm25 but sold for Lm35 - so even though the face value was only Lm25 , you wouldnt get it for less than Lm35 - of course the price includes the nice box and certificate

ah and i must say that this article is very comprehensive, something that collectors enjoy to read - thanks--Melitikus (talk) 18:20, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

BU/ Proof and Starter Kits

how about adding a new article, one about the Euro starter kits and another one about the BU/Proof sets from each country?, something similar like the article 'Euro gold and silver comm coins'--Melitikus (talk) 08:31, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I hope to create the sets articles as soon as the Euro Gold and Silver articles are complete, creating these articles is cumbersome and all help is greatly appreciated.Kevin hipwell (talk) 14:50, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

yes, all you need a collector from each eurozone country , maybe the pope can do the vatican one :-)--Melitikus (talk) 18:19, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Melitikus, I forgot to reply you on this one, this sounds like a good idea too. Why don't you go ahead and let us know here the name of the article(s) so we can track it. As Kevin mentioned, once we finish this "gold and silver" series (which we are half way through, feel free to pitch in) we would love to help on your idea. Miguel.mateo (talk) 22:43, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I've just started this article about the Euro Starter Kits and i will write the section about Malta - i hope others will fill the rest - I also hope the one day we'll build a table that takes in it all the articles related to the euro - so all the euro-related article will be gathered under one umbrella

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_Starter_Kits

--Melitikus (talk) 17:45, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Melitikus, very good start. I would suggest to put more information on other countries if you can do the research, or else it will not grow that quick, since those articles need "content" in order to start getting hits. Eventually you can add it to the template "Euro coins collectors" which is on the bottom of every "gold and silver" article. Miguel.mateo (talk) 22:45, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Similar Articles

the following article isnt similar to the 'Gold and Silver Comm Coins (Belgium)?? --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commemorative_coins_of_Belgium

--Melitikus (talk) 18:33, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I think the initial intention of that article and its sister articles was to contain all the commemorative coins each country had issued, however the Euro commemorative coins in themselves are very large articles so we separated them from each countries previous currency. I have not removed the Euro coins from the Belgium article simply because my current priority's are with creating the articles dealing with Euro coins. I hope to have the 2 articles one dealing with pre-Euro issues and the other with Euro issues for every country, for an example compare Commemorative coins of Ireland & Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Ireland).Kevin hipwell (talk) 20:10, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Melitikus, thanks for bringing this to my attention. This articles are so badly written that they did not show up in my days Googling euro commemorative coins, not even now (I just googled "commemorative coin belgium" and guess who is the first one?)
Any way, I suggest:
1. Create redirects from all the "Commemorative coins of xxxxx" to their respective "Euro gold and silver xxxxx" where there is no information in the first article, but just a bad list, most likely old.
2. For those areticles that do have some information on the old coins, change them similarly to the Commemorative coins of Ireland and work on them to make them better; but as Kevin says, I would love to finish the Euro series first.
Thanks,Miguel.mateo (talk) 06:22, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Layout

I believe this page should just be an introduction to the euro commemorative coins, then the table from which one can opt the country should be placed - i dont see any scope of having all the countries in one page when we have dedicated pages - what do you think?--Melitikus (talk) 18:07, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I have been thinking about it, kind of the same, this article will be huge. I was plannign to do something similar to the table of the €2 commemorative coins‎, where we can give just a ressume of what had happen in that country per year, but all descriptions of the coins are in the country's article. What do you htink? Miguel.mateo (talk) 22:43, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes that's a very good idea!--Melitikus (talk) 13:16, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I have changed Belgium, as a test, please tell me your opinions. Miguel.mateo (talk) 04:04, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
I like that way a lot similar to the €2 comm coins, It looks much cleaner and yet informative, Is there much effort to implement it?Kevin hipwell (talk) 05:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC
I think in some cases such as France we may have to use the "equal or greater than" =< symbols because some issues such as 2002,2003 & 2004 are not extensive.Kevin hipwell (talk) 05:43, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

{{NFimageoveruse}}

I am wondering why this tag was put in the beginning of the article, when all the images here are under the fair-use rationale for currency pictures. Does anyone have a clue? I have asked the editor ... Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:46, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Belgium

I'm a little worried that the sentence They have not used any other materials and they have not minted bimetal collectors' coins might be mis-interpreted by readers to suggest that Belgium has not release any commemorative coins other than in gold and silver.Kevin hipwell (talk) 05:52, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

True, let me fix that. Maybe including in the count the 2 euro commemoratives too? Will that be confusing? Miguel.mateo (talk) 06:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
I think a link to the €2 commemoratives should be enough, but I don't mind either wayKevin hipwell (talk) 06:57, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
So changing the paragraph saying that have done 2 euro commemorative should be enough? We should be consistent, so I vote for not to include them but do changing the words so people is not confused ... Miguel.mateo (talk) 07:00, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
yeah that sounds good.Kevin hipwell (talk) 07:52, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

== v.s. ===

Hi,

Another editor recently changed all subsections in all articles from === to ==, without any particular reason. I was wondering if there is any consensus out there since I personally liked more the way it used to be. Any opinions?

Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 04:48, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Europa Coins

I just opened the following articles and I hope that you will all help to expand it

--Melitikus (talk) 22:23, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Belgium for FL application

Just FYI, in case you want to follow what happens, I am proposing Belgium for Featured Article List (FL), the discussion is here: Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium)/archive1 ... Once the experience in this process is obtained, I am planning to propose Austria, Finland and Ireland (which are almost finished, needed to be polished) for FA as well.

Please be ready to any sort of outcome, since the reviewers are experienced editors and they may come with realy interesting and challenging ideas.

Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 10:06, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Quick update: The initial opinion was that this should be a Featured List, so I have moved it (I did not want to start a battle when the first three opinions said that a list is better). We have received a lot of good feedback and I have been working on it, so far everything in track, let's see the final result ;) Miguel.mateo (talk) 10:24, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Vatican

Hi, the Vatican article is ready, I have also included the €2 commemorative coins but if you disagree about that just delete them.--Melitikus (talk) 19:02, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Style

In Malta and as far as I know in all the former British colonies when we write let say 3 million in figures we write it this way 3,000,000 but in other countries they write it as 3.000.000 - then if we write 5 euro 25 cents we write €5.25 and they write €5,25 – which system should we use on here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Melitikus (talkcontribs) 14:46, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I have always used 3,000,000 & €5.25 that is the way I have been thought.Kevin hipwell (talk) 15:01, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes thats because you live in Ireland :-)--Melitikus (talk) 15:12, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I live in Japan, and it is as you guys have expressed. My English education is mainly American English, that may be the why ;) Miguel.mateo (talk) 15:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I'd guess that some people have probably had very heated argument on this issue.Kevin hipwell (talk) 00:27, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

In my Opinion

Hi – I know this wont sound very nice to you but in my opinion these pages should also include the €2 commemorative coins. So these pages would serve as the basic structure of commemorative coins - so we would have a page e.g.

  • Euro Commemorative Coins
  • sub-pages like Euro Commemorative Coins (Ireland) – which would include all the euro comm. Coins of country XXX
  • the sub-pages like Euro Commemorative Coins (Ireland) then would also make part of a bigger article “Commemorative Coins of Ireland.

And im also curious that once all these topics are ready is it possible to gather them all under one portal just for euro coins?--Melitikus (talk) 10:02, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I am not disagreeing, just a few points:
  • The 2 euro coins are heavily covered, the other commemorative where completely missing in Wikipedia.
  • It is too late to change the name of the articles, since that will imply changing the copyright information of all images.
  • The 2 euro coins are for circulation, while these coins are for collectors.
  • I have no issue adding the 2 euro coins if others agree.
The idea that I have (we talked about it somewhere) is once all articles are built, sources are reliable and information can be obtained from the different sources as soon as new coins are available, then to create a portal for euro collectors, but I have not put too much thoughts yet. Definitely something like latest releases or latestt news with releases to come should be there. Miguel.mateo (talk) 14:35, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey sound like good ideas, Im up for a discussion on it when the articles are finished (so don't forget to remind me), At the moment I don't want to derail my focus untill the articles are complete.Kevin hipwell (talk) 00:25, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

I am definitely with you Kevin, I am currently working on the Belgium article so we do not have to reinvent the wheel later, I think that if Belgium makes it to FL, then we have a good template for all articles based on the sample. Once that is finished I am definitely into finishing all of them ASAP. Miguel.mateo (talk) 11:42, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Austria joined Eurozone in 2002 or 1999?

There is a discrepancy in the joining date. In this article it is said that Austria joined eurozone in 2002 but in the Eurozone article it is said that they joined in 1999. Which date is correct? —Preceding unsigned comment added by (GD) (talkcontribs) 09:52, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

1999, but the euro was adopted as a circulating currency in 2002, will change the article to avoid confusion, thanks for bringing that up. Miguel.mateo (talk) 15:00, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
