Feedback for the Simmons folks

I know you folks are doing some interesting research. Please try to document who's doing what on the talk page and remember to sign your comments. Thanks Twepperson (talk) 20:58, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Berezin patents

[edit]

patent for data processing system Twepperson (talk) 16:14, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you view this page you will see that Berezin is the inventor, or co-inventor of seven patents. Certainly something could be done with this. ininventor:"Evelyn Berezin" Twepperson (talk) 21:12, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Airline reservation systems

[edit]

Computer reservation system claims these date to 1946, and in particular Sabre (computer system) dates to the mid/late 1950s. It's not impossible that there might be reliable references somewhere that credit Berezin or her employers at the time, but I've never seen any. MarkMLl (talk) 19:19, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Redactron-II and -III

[edit]

Noting https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/12/13/evelyn_berezin_obituary/ and agreeing that Berezin probably deserves more recognition in that field, I'd observe that I worked for Burroughs in the early 80s and among other things maintained Redactrons.

My understanding is that Berezin was disappointed that the Redactrons had not really introduced a revolution in secretarial work, and the units I saw were either R-IIs used as standalone word processors or were their successor the R-III which were sometimes used as terminals so that a pool of typists could handle an an organisation's routine mail: Midland Bank in the UK had regional offices using them for e.g. invitations for a customer to discuss his account with the local branch manager. I don't know what the R-IIIs used like this had as their backend, I don't think they were talking to the local B1800 "small system" so they might have been using (leased) modem lines to the bank's main computer systems (Burroughs "large systems").

I did however see a typewritten document which described a Redactron-specific text-processing backend which among other things purported to have OCR (in the very early 80s, apparently using eigenvalues in some way) but I have no reason to believe that this was any more than a project which had been abandoned when Burroughs bought Redactron lock stock and barrel.

The R-II was, IIRC, 8080-based. The CPU talked to a number of identical closely-coupled 40-pin custom chips which used proprietary (serial?) links to talk to other peripheral-specific chips, I have one on a display here labelled SMC and identified as an RGIF-01. The graphics interface was unusual since it had buffer memory for text but instead of having words wide enough to store attribute bits (embolden, underline and so on) there were reserved tags which the hardware had to apply to the bytes that followed until cancelled... the result was that screen position didn't have a consistent mapping to buffer address.

I think that the R-III had moved up to the 8085 but apart from that can't remember much about it except that it had a tiny screen (possibly about 8") positioned with absolutely horrid ergonomics... presumably Burroughs did this.

By the time I was involved both the R-II and R-III talked to standard daisy-wheel printers, Qume or Diabolo with (I think) the de-facto standard Centronics interface. Disc drives were 5.25" Shugarts which tended to drift out of alignment and had to be calibrated using a disc shipped in a sealed envelope... I think these were intended to be single-use but Burroughs didn't take much notice of that sort of thing. The keyboards, which formed the main user interface, were somewhat unpleasant since they had multiple command etc. keys and the operator had to remember numerous obscure combinations.

Oh, and if the operator removed a disc when she didn't oughter there was a loud electronic raspberry :-) MarkMLl (talk) 19:53, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Various photos etc at http://www.picklesnet.com/burroughs/gallery/bpgredactron.htm After reflection I remember the "Burroughs OFIS" name being bandied about but I really don't know whether anything shipped. MarkMLl (talk) 20:15, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Job offer redacted?

[edit]

"In 1960, Berezin had a job offer from the New York Stock Exchange redacted strictly because she was a woman, despite being one of few qualified for the job."

Redaction is mentioned several times in this article, but should this be "retracted"? J S Ayer (talk) 18:07, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
