Triplicate?[edit]

The heading Surgeons' Square appears three times with different texts. Perhaps there is a way to make it appear only once, or only once with sub headings.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 00:37, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Dthomsen8:Each subheading 'Surgeons' Square' refers to a different house in the square and is preceded by the relevant number. I tried putting 'Number 1' etc to clarify this but it looked a bit cumbersome so left it as is. Papamac (talk) 08:59, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Queen's College, Edinburgh[edit]

Iainmacintyre, I have another question, this article gives the dates of Queen's College as 1838–1842, but Triple Qualification refers to "Queen's College, established in 1841". Please could you check the dates?

I have added Queen's College, Edinburgh (1838–1842) to the Queen's College disambiguation page, and linked Alexander Rose (geologist), who lectured there on Geology and Mineralogy.^[1] I also found an 1884 report that "A petition has been addressed to Her Majesty in Council by Dr. Henry J. Littlejohn and others, praying that a charter of incorporation may be granted to the Queen's College, Edinburgh, and has been referred to a Committee of the Privy Council, by whom it will be taken into consideration on the 25th of September.".^[2] Perhaps that was an unsuccessful attempt to revive the name. Thanks @TSventon: I've found surprisingly little online about Queen's College. There is a large archive on the Extramural School in the Edinburgh College of Surgeons and I plan to visit when it reopens. Guthrie describes a syllabus for the School of Medicine, Argyll Square dated 1838-39 and goes on 'The connection between this school and Queens College is not clear' although they had lecturers in common.^[3] So from available evidence 1841 is the likely date for the start of Queen's College and I've made the change. That Littlejohn petition is interesting. Like you I suspect it was an attempt to revive the name, which would have been an attractive one in the circumstances. Thanks Iainmacintyre, I too was surprised by the lack of online information about Queen's College. I updated the disambiguation page in 2019 and wasn't sure the Edinburgh college existed. The Edinburgh Geological Society seem confused as well: Mrs Rose found "a Time Table of Queen's College, Edinburgh , for the Summer Session, 1841. This led to a most interesting discovery , since it proved conclusively that Queen's College was not a building but a Teaching or Lecturing Association under whose auspices lectures on a wide range of subjects were given in various places (Brown Square, Argyle Square, etc. )."
