Milnor's famous undergrad solution of an open problem was about Borsuk's conjecture. The incident is described in some detail in the book A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar (Milnor and John Nash were fellow graduate students). I don't know if the Fary-Milnor theorem is related. - The Fary-Milnor theorem was a conjecture by Borsuk. I don't remember the details from A Beautiful Mind so I don't remember whether the urban legend-ish nature is discussed, but I remember reading that the story is exaggerated. Milnor almost certainly knew it was an open problem. I'll look into it sometime. --C S (Talk) 16:46, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Smoothness[edit]
The last paragraph seems to be saying the initial assumption of smoothness can be dispensed with. Isn't there some neat way of stating the result that's independent of whether there's any smoothness or not? Michael Hardy (talk) 22:25, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
