Undue Weight in "Split from Fairtrade International"

[edit]

Concerning the split, this section seems to reflect only the position of Fair Trade USA. The World Fair Trade Organization, for example, has criticized FTUSA's withdrawal from the Fairtrade Labelling Organization as a move toward "watering down the principles of Fair Trade". Lloyd Alter of Treehugger.com criticized FTUSA's move as "the corporatizing of Fair Trade in the USA". I think some of these critiques should be incorporated in the section in question. 71.217.8.179 (talk) 03:17, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See also Fairtrade International's "Q&A on Fairtrade International and Fair Trade USA" and the statement from the CAN Alliance of Fairtrade Producer Networks criticizing FTUSA's move, in part, as follows:

"At this very promising moment for Fairtrade International, the three Producer Networks are very disappointed to learn that Fair Trade USA has resolved to leave the Fairtrade Labelling system (FLO), all the more so as they have not been consulted prior to this decision. They are also disappointed to see that Fair Trade USA has chosen to define its own orientations rather than forming part of the global vision, key principles and shared strategy endorsed by all members of Fairtrade International. The
Producer Networks cannot support this unilateral action on the part of Fair Trade USA, which goes against their aspirations and interests."

Issue with references

[edit]

In this edit, the "Critics argue" paragraph was added with some problems with the references. Could someone who understands the references please decide how this should be cleaned up? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:18, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is the problem with the references? They seem to conform to normal academic standards. Thanks.AidWorker (talk) 10:59, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that reference #31 does not display properly. GoingBatty (talk) 13:22, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you: problem solved. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AidWorker (talkcontribs) 09:33, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please look at reference #28 now? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:22, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Criticisms... section

[edit]

The Criticisms... section seems to be focused more on Fair trade than on Fair Trade USA, the topic of this article. Would suggest the need for some editing there... Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 16:19, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The following statement appears to be quite subjective and perhaps contentious without citations. "The evidence is that little of the extra money paid by consumers reaches the Third World, let alone farmers there. The fair trade research that I have read does not appear to be conclusive on this point. KARDuVarney (talk) 21:26, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About Fair Trade USA

[edit]

"The Fair Trade model requires rigorous protection of local ecosystems and ensures farmers work in safe conditions and receive a harvest price. In addition, annual inspections conducted by independent auditors like FLO-CERT and SCS Global Services ensure that..." This is misleading; the capitalization of the two words implies that the model belongs to Fair Trade USA, but the next sentence references "independent auditors like FLO-CERT..." They are not affiliated. If the text is referencing the fair trade model in general, the capitalization of Fair and Trade needs to be removed. If the two sentences are in fact talking about Fair Trade USA's fair trade model, the references to other certifying agencies need to be removed.
