Galatian settlement

[edit]

The Ptolemies settled galatians in the area, giving them a kleros of land in exchange for service. Perhaps more research should be done. It apparently was a big enough influence that one can still find phenotypes left over from the celtoi population

Oasis

[edit]

The 'only' difference between the Fayyum and other oases is that the Fayyum is not an oasis. It is a lake. The word *iom* in Coptic (related to the Hebrew *ym*) is normally understood as 'sea', and I suspect that it was used to indicate large expanses of water fed by incoming rivers, in pretty much the same way that the German 'See' means both, the only difference there being one of gender: 'sweet' (m.) and 'salt' (f.). Oasis, as used in Egyptian and Coptic, refers to an area watered by underground water that have nothing to do with the Nile. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pamour (talkcontribs) 12:37, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

[edit]

This (corrected for spelling) was floating around on the Faiyum page, Im dumping it here just in case someone might want to expand on it in this article

Undisputed remains of early anthropoids date from the late Eocene and early Oligocene, about 34 million years ago, in the Faiyum area, southwest of Cairo, Egypt. One of the earliest fossil primates at Faiyum is Catopithecus, dating to around 35 million years ago."

If this unsourced statement is true (I believe it is except for the :Undisputed" part) than perhaps the Faiyum Oasis article may be well served by mentioning it, unless this location is outside what would be considered the Faiyum Oasis Noexit2002 (talk) 05:40, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
