Edit maybe: "parent / child" to "mother / daughter" ?[edit]

"For the first time ever a parent and child played together in a football match for their country."

Actually the first time when such an occasion did happen was on April 24, 1996 at Iceland vs Estonia international friendly event.

"On 24 April 1996, Guðjohnsen and his father Arnór entered football history when playing in an international friendly for Iceland against Estonia in Tallinn. Arnór started the match, and Guðjohnsen came on in the second half as a substitute for his father."

A son came on as a substitute for his father mid-game that time though - does that qualify for "playing together"?

I have heard about those two, but they didn't play together at the same time in the same match, the son substituted for his father, they were supposed to play together in a match in Iceland later, but Eiður Smári broke his leg, so it didn't happen. I don't know, if it was not correct to write about this as a special event, but the Faroese media wrote about the story, as it was the first time in history that a parent/child played together in the same international match. It would be correct to write about Arnór and Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen here also. (One of the articles in the Faroese media about this is here: sportal.fo)
