FIPS 58, 59 and 61

[edit]

It appears they have another use. If you look at the public school K-12 database, the local education agency ID is a combination of several FIPS ID's, among them "state" except that there are DOZENS of schools in states 58, 59 and 61 whose physical location are either within one of the 50 states or on foreign US DoD bases. #58 appears to be split between AE and AP (about 2:1), while #59 is - literally - all over the map (22 states, mostly in NM, ND, and SD). #61 has 7 states, PR, and AP.

I have no idea what I should assign the districts to since they cover multiple places. I'm sure they're DoD related.

Change HA (Hawaii abbreviation) to HI

[edit]

Hello,

I believe the correct abbreviation for Hawaii is 'HI'. It's listed in the article as 'HA'.

I'm new at this so I'm not sure how to make edits. Sorry to pass the buck.

Cheers, Derald

Templates Removed?

[edit]

The page looks like a mess of red to me, referring to templates/pages that don't exist. Has something happened recently? Hichris 18:16, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm.. Looks like the templates are still there. But only the first 20 or so seem to work, the others all show up in red. Hichris 19:21, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Something is off in the first couple of lines

[edit]

“Used in this encyclopedia?” What the heck does that mean? Looks like a passage plagiarized from elsewhere. --24.239.145.243 11:49, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Same as

[edit]

One must take caution when equating different things. In particular, to say that something is the same as another can be fraught with pitfalls.

"Please note that FIPS codes are not the same thing as ZIP Codes, however the two-letter abbreviations for U.S. states are the same as the Postal Service state abbreviations."

The first clause simply says that FIPS codes are not ZIP codes, a simple concept. The second (which is independent, and ought to be punctuated as such) says that the two-letter abbreviations use in both specifications are alike. Perhaps the following revision would do.

"Note that although FIPS codes are not ZIP codes, they do use the two-letter abbreviations prescribed by the Postal Service for states in the US."

They aren't there

[edit]

I have a question: Why are there no State FIPS codes for 03, 07, 14, 43, and 52? Why are these codes skipped?

Good question, I'll answer it in the article, as it seems relevant. --Sturmde 7 July 2005 18:03 (UTC)

    • Furthermore... "Codes 03, 07, 14, 43, and 52 in the above table were formerly used for the certain territories, but some users found it difficult to separate them out from the States as a result so they were reassigned codes higher up in the system." What's the rationale for this statement? These codes aren't mentioned at all in FIPS 5-2, but FIPS 5-1 says, "Note: The following codes are reserved for possible future use in identifying American Samoa (03), Canal Zone (07), Guam (14), Puerto Rico (43), and Virgin Islands (52)."--Ant (talk) 19:29, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Counties column

[edit]

Why are those links in this article? --Ant (talk) 19:08, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The linked county articles - or at least the ones I checked - include FIPS county codes. A person who found a FIPS state code in this article may then want a code for a county within that state. 143.45.64.71 (talk) 01:54, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
