Is the space suit used on Shenzhou 7 one-of-a-kind, named "Fetian", or is it one of several suits of the "Fetian" design? The current wording leaves this a bit unclear. Is there any reliable source that discusses this? Will the suits used for future spaceflights also be called "Feitian space suits"? (sdsds - talk) 03:42, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I checked out the refs given at the Shenzhou 7 article and, to be honest, it's not clear. My intuition is that they made multiple suits like this (they did manufacture 300 sq meters of the material from which the suit was made) but I can't verify it. The language in the SZ7 article implies that there were more than one when it says "Each suit was reported to have cost 30 million RMB" (emphasis added), but none of the English articles given actually say anything about more than one suit. The Chinese articles might (assuming that that's where the original editors got the idea to write "each suit..."), but at the moment I don't have the patience or energy to go through them (I can read Chinese news but it takes me a good long time). —Politizertalk • contribs ) 04:52, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

missing redirects[edit]

飞天号航天服, 飞天, Feitian space-suit 70.51.8.75 (talk) 11:57, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a redirect page for Feitian space-suit. As for 飞天 and 飞天号航天服, I don't believe it is standard practice to create redirect pages for titles in other languages. For example, none of the searches 神七神州七号神州7 will lead you to Shenzhou 7. —Politizertalk • contribs ) 13:58, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's standard practice if it's the original language. That's why we have {{R from another language}}. 70.51.8.75 (talk) 07:03, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have Feitian... just noticed. 70.51.8.75 (talk) 07:03, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Created. That page needs to be a disambiguation page, not a redirect, as Feitian is the name of several other things as well. —Politizertalk • contribs ) 14:19, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sources for claims about etymology of Feitian[edit]

If you could get some English sources instead, or translate the relevant lines of the Chinese sources and quote them in the reference, that would be great. As this is English Wikipedia, all sources should be accessible to English speakers, no matter what the topic of the article is. —Politizertalk • contribs ) 06:17, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If that were so - in a perfect world, perhaps, where the English language media do not go around supplying their own dodgy translations of Chinese terms in ignorance of the wealth of culture and history that belie even something seemingly so technical.
I agree with your point about accessibility, however. My normal practice is to translate the article titles - which I will do here. As for translations of article content, I might leave that to google translator. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 06:35, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need to attack English or any other media here. I was merely requesting that you provide English for any Chinese sources you put in the article. Please don't use Google or any other automated translation software for editing the article; you are free to use it if it helps you read the sources, but don't copy and paste anything directly from a translator into the article, as even the best translation software still leaves things riddled with errors at best, and outright wrong at worst. If you don't want to translate the articles yourself, let me know the paragraph number of the relevant statements in each article (the statements backing up your claims about the etymology of Feitian) and I will try to translate them sometime. —Politizertalk • contribs ) 06:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for reminding me not to rely on Google translator. I trust that I have sense enough to know that. I said I will leave the translation of the contents to google - for any interested reader who cannot read Chinese but wishes to have some rough understanding of the article.
Your earlier statement that "all sources must be accessible to an English reader" would, if taken literally, exclude much valuable information from these article.
There is a need to attack English or "any other" media here. The previous statement, cited via Bloomberg, that Feitian meant "flying the sky" was ignorant, because it was plainly stated without any knowledge of the cultural and historical background to the name. It irks me that even a fairly respectable source like Bloomberg would make statements like these, and I have the right to whinge about it. It really does not take much to avoid errors like this. They just need to pass their China-related articles through someone who has the most elementary understanding of Chinese culture. I doubt that Bloomberg would say something like this if it were a French, Hebrew, or even Japanese term. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 06:55, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that there are other non-English sources doesn't automatically give you a green light to put in anything you want. No matter what the status of other sources in an article, when you add a new source the onus is on you to do what you can to make it useful for the reader. If it's a Chinese source, then it's useless for someone who can't ready Chinese—which is most of the people using English Wikipedia. Now, you added the source so I assume you've read it and know where in the article it says "t is a reference to the apsara" and "Imagies of the feitian from Dunhuang appear on the arm badge"; at that point, is it really very much extra work for you to add a translation of the one or two sentences within the footnote?
My point is, no matter what the condition of an article, you should always hold yourself to a high standard when you add new information to the article&madah;if you add only a half-decent footnote that still needs a translation later, you're just creating more problems that need to be fixed. When you add a reference to an article, you should always have the reader in mind, and ask yourself how this reference will or will not benefit the reader.—Politizertalk • contribs ) 12:53, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a picture to article[edit]

How about this http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chinese_EVA_spacesuit_%281%29.JPG —Preceding unsigned comment added by Craigboy (talkcontribs) 17:14, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway we can add a video of the eva(as a link)[edit]

Preferably it showed be raw footage (no news cast re-broad with symbols on screen and commentators) and high-quality. I've found several vidoes but most are pretty low quality (youtube was sadly my best source) and I've had zero luck in finding the footage by itself.--Craigboy (talk) 02:04, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Info to add[edit]

A couple of weeks ago a amazing video on the suits were posted on youtube. It can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GMYO-Jfw1U
