This article perfectly illustrates the perils of part-translating Germanic place names into English. By changing Fernpass to Fern Pass we have constructed an apparantly English name that almost any native English speaker would erroneously assume was derived from the Fern or Pteridophyta botanical family.

We should either leave well alone (eg. Fernpass) or translate properly (Remote Pass or Far Pass?). My choice would be 'Fernpass', but that would not be consistent with the naming of all the other Germanic passes. Also I suspect I'm in a minority in not believing in translating German language proper nouns when naming articles. So what to do?. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 10:52, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
