"After realizing what he was doing to the thousands of Jews each and every day for nearly three years" If he worked as Sonderkommando from April 42 to January 45 (and I thought gassings stopped in October 44) then the incident reported would have taken place right at the end of his time, which would strike me as odd. What?

as in he physically saw a million Jews die?

where was he watching this from?

how he did keep track?

is there any proof of this besides his own word? and why is it stated as if it's a fact with absolutely no citation links?

Yes, this is a strange, and what I believe to be melodramatic, way of describing Muller's experience. There's also the problem of the length of time he was employed as a sonderkommando. If you look at the Sonderkommando page, it states that such workers were usually kept for 4 months and then themselves gassed, only to be cremated by the newly arrived sonderkommandos. But Muller claims to have done this work from April 1942 through January 1945, about 8 times the usual stint. Finally, and I realize this is very subjective, but the imperative given to Muller by the girl who dissuades him from suicide just sounds improbable. A room full of frightened, naked prisoners, and Muller, a boy somewhere between 12 and 15, joins them and get's lectured by a girl that he should live. So, what then? He walks out naked from the gas chamber, finds his clothes, puts them on, and goes back to his "job", all going on unnoticed by the guards. The man's been through hell, no doubt. I won't begrudge him the right to romanticize such a horrific experience, if that's what he wants. Jyg (talk) 20:12, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Muller would have been in his 20s, not 12 to 15 as Jyg says. I don't know if this matters much, but if calling the whole episode into question, his being 12 makes it more questionable than 20.Jrm2007 (talk) 10:56, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

If you read his book it is explained starting on page 113-114. He was fully clothed when entering and attempted to find a spot where he hoped to go unrecognized by anyone. However, as you know he is found out and told to leave in order to bear witness to the atrocities happening all around him. After being persuaded to leave, he has to force his way out, as more people were being pushed in. Finally, he reaches the entrance only to be beaten by the guards, "You bloody shit. Get in your stupid head: we decided how long you stay alive and when you die, not you. Now piss off to the ovens" (114).

The Sonderkommandos were routinely murdered after 4 months working in the gas chambers, so that they would not tell anyone else. There were 13 successive groups of them, one replacing the other. How come Muller never got murdered ? He says that there were always 'selections' from the Sonderkommando and he never got selected. This goes against the idea that the whole unit were killed every 4 months. Any ideas ?
