Vessels

[edit]

I think the vessel list should only include active ones. The Turunmaa class isn't owned by the Navy anymore. GN113 Warbird Consulting Oy owns Turunmaa and the Osa 2 FACs. I think old ships should be mentioned in the history section which is very incomplete at the moment. I think there should be atleast a mention of the mineclearance after the war and the 1998 merging of coastal artillery and the navy. --Laisak 21:22, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note on my talk page, it gets boring indeed when other editors aren't contributing/commenting. A good suggestion, when someone get the time a History of the Finnish Navy should be made where these would fit. A lot of WWII info can be found floating about on the net and I think that the Swedish Wikipedia has alot of info on pre-Grand Duchy affairs of the navy. The only literarure I've got that relate to this topic is The World's Navies by Salamander Books, I'm quite sure it mentioned that the Turunmaa class was first with CODOG. There's a lot of sites where veterans tell their stories about the war. There's a whole bunch of navy veterans among them. For example, there was this one site where a veteran gave a lengthy (but interesting) description of the battle of Someri island (which is briefly mentioned in this article). There also were accounts of the sinking of Ilmarinen. Unfortunately I can't remember what site this was, but I'll try to search for it some time. --HJV 00:36, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hila class

[edit]

I can't find any information on the Hila-class transports. Could someone please confirm their existance? Axeman89 01:53, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can personally confirm atleast two of them, Hila in Kotka and Hästö in Upinniemi were in service in 2003. They are closely related to the Hauki class being slightly larger. For specs and pictures see Heikki Helen's Shippages. --Laisak 18:12, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prefix

[edit]

Is the Finnish navy ship prefix really FNS? In Finnish, the official Finnish Navy webpages do not use any prefixes, only mentioning the ship type: miinalaiva Hämeenmaa, ohjusvene Hamina. I believe that the prefix is only used in international exercises, as most Western navies use prefixes and calling Finnish Navy flagship Mil Hamina would cause misunderstandings.

It is true that they aren't widely used internally in the Finnish Navy, but as you said that is very common in other navies too. FNS is indeed used on international exercises, but also every time the ship identifies itself on international waters. I only have personal experience on the matter and can't back it up with some official statement. --Laisak 20:43, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Search results on the FDF website show at least some references to the usage of FNS (ncluding one erroneous reference to a French ship that should be FS) http://tietokannat.mil.fi/cgi-bin/htsearch?words=FNS&x=0&y=0 --Laisak (talk) 10:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hovercraft Tuuli

[edit]

I see Tuuli was removed from the vessel list as being sold. Does anyone have a reference to this? It is still on the official website and I can't find any announcement on the deal. --Laisak 20:46, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Victory before the battle!?

[edit]

I think it should be explained by someone with more knowledge why there's a battle honours from Russian/Swedinh war in late 1700's if the whole navy's been active only since 1918! I'm talking about the quick facts section on right/top part of the page.

Originating from Finland with terrible history knowledge I can only quess it's about the battle in Aland(?) and I'm not doubting the honour, just would like to see clarification why someone got congratulations over hundred years before they were born. I didn't :)

The reason is that the Finnish Navy, right or wrong, considers the Swedish Archipelago fleet to be part of its lineage, as that fleet was responsible for defence of the Finnish coast, based at Sveaborg in Finland, had a major part of its men and officers from Finland and even had its main ship claasses named after Finnish provinces. The same practice is also used by the Finnish Army. The brigades usually count their lineages from the Swedish regiments of their eponymous provinces. For example, Pori Brigade flies the colour of the former Swedish Bjöneborgs Regemente, which was founded in 1634 in the same province where the current brigade is based at.--MPorciusCato (talk) 21:46, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

History section etc.

[edit]

I removed "two fast gunboats" and "some minesweepers" from the sentence listing vessels bought from the UK during the cold war. There were no references and the only gunboats from that era that I recall are the Turunmaa class gunboats, built in the 1960s in Finland. If someone can find some reference, feel free to revert my edit.

Someone should also write something about the modern era in the history section. After all, quite many ships have been ordered since the early 90s.

I also added a request for additional references and citations (there aren't many!) and did some general editing and clean-up for example in the past equipment section (added most notable ships, ordered them by commissioning date and removed Tuuli class hovercraft as it was never taken into service). Tupsumato (talk) 08:54, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the mineweepers were the "Puupää-class" (British BYMS-class, Purunpää, Vahterpää, Tammenpää, and Katanpää), and the gunboats were Vasama 1 and 2 (British Dark-class fast gunboats bought in 1957). --MoRsE (talk) 09:33, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here are some links, about the Puupääs (in Finnish) [1], and about the Vasamas [2] (in English). --MoRsE (talk) 09:40, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I stand corrected. I'll try to find time to revise and improve the article at a later date, but for now I added links to the respective vessel classes since they have their own articles. Tupsumato (talk) 09:44, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
