Adding References & Expanding Aboriginal Comment[edit]

I note this article does not appear to be referenced? This is of interest to me, as I see Fitroy Island named with a version of Kunkandji . in additon to the name Gabar, and was curious as to source of this information.

I nonte Kunkandji is the name adopted for the language group who claim a native title to the Islande, but I did not know this may also have been a name for the island? I've just now Tim Bottoms 1992 map, and I've checked Dixon's Searching for Languages .. neither appear to have given Kukandji as a name for the island .. Perhaps there is an earlier reference?

If name can't be cited, perhaps it can be dropped from the article .. also, maybe, it might be of interest to add the Bottom's and Dixon references to 'Gabar' as name for the island, plus, perhaps, a little of the Aboriginal history for the island .. going back to a time 2000 or more years ago when water levels were much lower?

I'll wait a couple of days .. and, if there is no objection I might do the above .. plus bracket the Aboriginal name in the info box and even the article page headig?? Bruceanthro 12:55, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've just linked on the Qld Department Natural Resources Placenames database .. and see the listing here as attributing Merton as naming is Goongandgee Islander! The whole narritive contained on this database, however, is a little unreliable .. as Dixon did not work in the area in 1891, though he did seem to record stories about it in 1973 and may have included these plus name Gabar in his book in Yidinji language/grammer?! On these grounds I may still remove current refernence to Gookandjee . noting the QPWS has an alternative Aboriginal spelling for the name of the island altogether, and I imagine this may be the most recent record?! Assessment comment[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Fitzroy Island National Park/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Article has good photos and good general introduction (of a kind most likely to be of interest to people actually visiting the island). Unfortunately, there is no referencing, and, at present, limited discussion about the natural and cultural values that have lead to it being included within Queensland's protected area estate.
