Language[edit]

CRTC source for 2000 air dates on Teletoon[edit]

I saw this listed as a source but could not find that it supported it. I am removing it from the page and putting it here so we can improve on it before restoring it.

First complaint, the archive URL does not work. https://archive.org/details/support_crtc_gc_ca1505201 just gives me an 'item cannot be found' error. This needs to be replaced with a working archive.

Second complaint, the URL simply lists to a log overview page. It is not specific enough. It gives a list of folders for each month from August 1999 to December 2015, after which point it gets a bit messy. CRTC obviously need to clean up their folder names as they are inconsistent in some places, weird parts which do not appear to conform to months like 201313 2014-1 or 201414 or 201416 which I don't understand the purpose of.

We need to link to places which actually list the data directly though, even if this means citing different URLs for each episode.

I am concerned about when the parenthesized year 2000 dates for Teletoon are supported by this source or not. I'm wondering where I should be looking and what string to search for.

To give an example, it says March 27, 2000 next to Cream of the Crop. The log for things which aired in March 2000 should logically be in ftp://support.crtc.gc.ca/logs/200003/

In that folder is ftp://support.crtc.gc.ca/logs/200003/TOON_0003_3revTOON200003.zip which contains 3revTOON200003.TXT

When I search 'Flight Squad' you see:

"Promo-Flight Squad-Premiers Monday@1830 " repeatedly throughout the document with a variety of numbers in front (I think this indicates each broadcast of the commercials) the first being PRCTOON 000301064313064323000010 which I am unsure how to read (I figure this indicates the day/hour/minute somehow)

Searching the episode title itself gives more success, first result:

I'd still love to know how to make sense of that number... I'm thinking the first 2 is the year (00 for 2000) and the next 2 is the date (03 is March) and the next two is the day (27th) and the next two is the hour (18 = 3pm) and the next two is the minutes (29 is very close to the 30min mentioned in the above commercials) probably making it 53 seconds (airing 7 seconds short of the announced time is pretty close.

User:Ranze, I'm quite glad that someone has finally taken an interest in these sources. I would, however, ask you to please restore the citation, with a "questionable" tag if you really want. Removing a citation altogether is not supposed to be done unless you are reasonably sure it does NOT contain the cited info.

Your link is incorrect; it should be: https://archive.org/details/support_crtc_gc_ca15052016 (You left off the "6" at the end.) Please restore this link as soon as possible.

For how to read the citations, you may want to consult this file: ftp://support.crtc.gc.ca/logs/pgm_utility_2002.mdb If you have trouble with that file (for a multitude of possible reasons, I admit it's difficult to work with), then let me know and I'll try to post the info I have from it.

@Mdrnpndr: sorry, restored the archive at special:diff/734956168. I had already added back the main URL. Initially I had removed it because I couldn't find the data but that was actually due to looking at tele0003.txt in ftp://support.crtc.gc.ca/logs/200003/ instead of TOON_0003_3revTOON200003.zip would be nice if they used the full name instead of just 'toon', only thought to check for that on a second pass.

Will check out this pgm_utility, this is a resource for affirming air dates I'm only just learning about, seems far more preferable to citing zap2it as it often has mistakes. I bet contributors to that site check a similar kind of web site in the united states but they often seem to overlook Canadian data, which is unfortunate since many episodes debut here before in the US.

Given that this is a French-Canadian show, do you think we should also list the french dates? We'd probably need to know the French titles first to search them though... seems troublesome. I only learned of this show due to it still being broadcast on a French station, though I think it was something other than Teletoon. I noticed them in the same folder as TLTOON_0003_3revTLTOON200003.zip (I figure TL stands for Translated?) although the notation seems to vary over the years as in recent months they seem to just annote the file as 'F' or something for French-language Teletoon channel. As I have noted elsewhere, Zap2it is MUCH less reliable than this data. I've seen so many outright errors on Zap2it that it's ridiculous. This data, on the other hand, is apparently required to be accurate by law (but I am not a lawyer, so don't trust me on that). AFAIK there is no American equivalent, however, as American law apparently does not require TV programming logs to be kept at all (though again, I am not a lawyer, so don't trust me on that either... or indeed on any legal matters at all).

I actually think that the French-language dates should replace the American ones. It is technically against Wikipedia policy to list the American dates as this is not an American show (at least according to the infobox). I kept them for now only because some episodes would otherwise have no airdates listed at all, but it seems that the French-language channel showed all the episodes of this series.

BTW, this show was known as "Air Academy" in French-speaking Canada. Mdrnpndr (talk) 21:01, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
