SPECIAL HOLD DATE: May (Asian Pacific American Heritage Month)

  • I would suggest that revisions be made to the hooks because none of them make it clear how Mata is supposed to be important. Maybe mention that she was the first Filipino-American teacher hired in California? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 11:22, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5: how about ALT3, ... that Flora Arca Mata, after being stuck in the Philippines during World War II, returned back to Stockton to become California's first Filipino American teacher? Or ALT4 ... that the funds which paid for California's first Filipino American teacher's education, Flora Arca Mata, were earned by her farmworker older sister? Source: "Stockton school to be named after California's first Fil-Am teacher" Stockton Record, 2019

I think those sound better. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 03:47, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5: is that a review of the nomination, or just a statement of opinion about the original proposed hooks?--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 05:37, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It was only a comment since right now I'm a bit busy in real life with the virus scaring us and all, but I might have time to give it a review tomorrow if no one else does it by then. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 06:43, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Article is new enough, long enough, and adequately sourced. Earwigs is currently not working for me so I am unable to check for close paraphrasing right now. QPQ has been done. I like ALT3 the best, but I can't seem to find the part about her being the first Fil-Am teacher in the article, only that she was the first Filipino-American woman to graduate from UCLA (which could actually work as a hook itself). Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 07:18, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5: Earwig is running slow, but you can AGF on copyvio, as I am not the type to copy paste content into articles. On the concern about the first FilAm teacher in California statement in the article, it is stated in the lead section of the article, as well as stated in the first paragraph of the source linked here for ALT3.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 00:05, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The hook fact either needs to be mentioned in the body as well (and not just the lede), or to have a footnote that provides a reference for it (per DYK rules). Only being mentioned in the lede without a citation is insufficient for DYK purposes. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:09, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5: WP:DYKRULES does not state that the fact needs to be mentioned in the body, and not the lede. It says

The hook should include a definite fact that is mentioned in the article and interesting to a broad audience.

The lede section is part of the article, thus it is in the article. It is cited. Why make up a new rule? Moreover, the fact in the lede is cited to this source which states

Flora Arca Mata broke new ground as the first Filipino-American teacher in the state of California, paving the way for other minority educators.

Thus the fact has been verified to a reliable source, and is in the article.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 05:51, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@RightCowLeftCoast: did you want this nomination to be held in the SPECIAL HOLD DATE: May (Asian Pacific American Heritage Month)? — Maile (talk) 03:38, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Maile66: yes please.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 05:51, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, never mind, I'm not sure how I missed the reference in the lede. I never said anything about hook facts not being in the lede not being allowed, only that they need to be referenced even if they're in the lede. In any case, I think I was mistaken with the referencing here, and I'm not sure how I failed to notice the footnote; my apologies. Since that has been resolved and no issues remain, this is now good to go. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 13:14, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
