POV of Article

[edit]

This article has much valuable info, but makes several unsubstantiated statements and tends to read like an advertisement for Florida Virtual. Alternate points of view and actual statistics and citations would help bring this page to neutrality. - —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MLBbrad (talkcontribs) .

I disagree. There is nothing to advertise (as it is a US government-supported public school). I'm removing your tag. -- WiiVolve 03:07, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FLVS may be a government-supported school, however, it does have to compete with other schools and as such it does have something to advertise. If you don't want to call it an ad, that's fine... but it's still certainly not NPOV.

Yeah, I also think it reads like an advertisement. It's okay for the article to say positive things about FLVS, but it seems too sugar-coated and written in a persuasive tone rather than an explanative tone. Something got rid of the advert warning; I'm going to put it back up and ask the person to discuss it instead. --Fastman99 00:03, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article is now more informative than advertising. I think the label needs to go. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nonamer98 (talkcontribs) 16:24, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the following, I am referring to the version of the page that was apparently mostly written in 2013. Previous criticism regarding the character of advertisement still holds for the current version, in my opinion. What is of more concern, however, is that most of the references (31 in total as of 2020-06-11) are either from Florida Virtual themselves, or link to non-existent (no longer existent?) pages, or are of marginal concern. While references to their own pages is OK as such, it is the lack of independent assessment that casts the information into doubt. Also, there are no references newer than 2013, so the current status is not reflected.

Here is an overview of the references that do not refer to material hosted by FLVS:

  • ref 2 "Quick facts" (Lead Commission) appears just to display FLVS promotional material without independent assessment, based on information from 2012
  • ref 3 "FLVS paves the way in distance education" just leads to the Nova Southeastern University home page, the referenced article seems also not accessible through that site's search function
  • ref 5 "A comphrehensive Assessment..." (FloridaTaxWatch Center) just links to the FLVS home page instead of an independent source
  • ref 8 "FLVS: Building the first statewide..." (Christensen Institute) does exist, it is an article from 2009, describing the early years of the school.
  • ref 10 "Data & Information Florida" (kpk12.com) links to a page that just says "no information available"
  • ref 18 "FLVS Full time" (Florida Department of Education) does exist and gives a basic description (no assessment) as of 2013
  • ref 19 "Our school" links to a non-existent page (HTTP Status 404)
  • ref 20 "FLVS Full Time Host..." ditto
  • ref 22 "Virtual Schools" (Florida Department of Education) links to a non-existent page (HTTP status 404)
  • ref 24 "Blended Learning" (Christensen Institute) leads to a non-existent page.
  • ref 25 same as ref 10
  • ref 26 "Florida Virtual School Education Fact Sheet" (myfloridahouse.gov) leads to a non-existent host
  • refs 27, 28, 29 do exist, they are newpaper articles about legislative funding changes discussed in 2013. Outcomes are not mentioned.

To-Do List

[edit]

Howdy,

Thanks to Andy's automatic peerreviewer.js script, here are some of the stuff we now know we need to change:

  • The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and may or may not be accurate for the article in question.
  • Per WP:CONTEXT and WP:MOSDATE, months and days of the week generally should not be linked. Years, decades, and centuries can be linked if they provide context for the article.
  • This article does not have any categories. Please categorize it with relevant [[Category:Categories]].
  • This article is a bit too short, and therefore may not be as comprehensive as WP:WIAFA critera 2(b) is looking for. Please see if anything can be expanded upon.
  • Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • This article needs footnotes, preferably in the cite.php format recommended by WP:WIAFA. Simply, enclose inline citations, with WP:CITE or WP:CITE/ES information, with <ref>THE FOOTNOTE</ref>. At the bottom of the article, in a section named “References” or “Footnotes”, add <div class="references-small"><references/></div>.
    • To assist you with this, add {{subst:js|User:AndyZ/monobook.js/footnotehelper.js}} to your monobook.js file (mine is located at User:AndyZ/monobook.js) and then bypass your browser's cache by pressing: Mozilla/Safari/Konqueror: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), Internet Explorer: press Ctrl-F5, Opera: press F5. In editing mode, click on the "Footnote creater" tab that appears.
  • The article will need references. See WP:CITE and WP:V for more information.
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that the it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 2a.
  • You may wish to browse through User:AndyZ/Suggestions (and the javascript checklist; see the last paragraph in the lead) for further ideas.

Thanks! Ec 21:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment

[edit]

(Mid) I changed to Mid because of the historical implications of being on of the first, if not the first online high schools in the USA. If you would like to change the class of this article from start, please do the above. Calebrw (talk) 13:46, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Reference

[edit]

I'm a bit busy currently, so if anyone wants to add material from this site (Florida DoE), then feel free to do so. http://www.floridaschoolchoice.org/Information/Virtual_Schools/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nonamer98 (talkcontribs) 17:42, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper articles.

[edit]

[1] [2] Here are a few articles talking about FLVS having to cut funds and such. I am not sure that I am allowed to touch this article much since I actually take classes through FLVS. ha. Blake (Talk·Edits) 15:47, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am removing the notability tag. This school is attracting special interest among educators. It has been in the news 137 times in the last month alone. I can find no explanation as to why this tag was added. --seberle (talk) 15:23, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The logo for this changed. However, I'm a guest so I can't upload it. I found a image when I searched "flvs" in Google Images, however this is only one of the versions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.233.52.171 (talk) 16:05, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
