Wasn't there a rally driver in the '50s also so-called? Trekphiler 15:40, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed pagemove

The result of the proposal was Moved to Flying Finn (sports). Duja 07:09, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm planning on adding a little detail to the rallying side of this, and also adding a link to this page from the relevant articles. However, I think "(athlete)" is too specific to the runners. The article isn't really big enough to justify splitting into separate "(athlete)" and "(driver)" pages, so I propose renaming in order to represent athletes and drivers amore equitably. --DeLarge 09:42, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support move. I thought the move from (term) to (athlete) didn't really improve the page title, as athlete, at least for many Europeans, means "track and field" athletics and not sportsmen in general. With more about rallying in the article, this move makes a lot of sense. Prolog 11:04, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support move. I would suggest "...(sports)" instead of "...(sport)" to avoid initial confusion about whether "Flying Finn" is a sport rather than a subject of sports. Peter O. (Talk) 03:58, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, the guy is not even a Fin, he's from Kosovo or wherever...why is he even included on the Flying Finns' list? Norum 03:40, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

The result of the move request was: page moved per discussion. - GTBacchus(talk) 02:25, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Flying Finn (sports)Flying Finn – As the page view statistics now show, the sports term is the primary meaning over the short-lived airline named after it. The dab page is unnecessary and can be replaced with a hatnote. Prolog (talk) 21:24, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. Only by a mechanical application of policy and guidelines, blind to the actual needs of readers, could such a move begin to make sense. Nothing would be gained by dropping the qualifier, and immediate utility – in making the meaning clear – would be lost. NoeticaTea? 00:45, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Readers are the reason I'm proposing this move. Instead of the clear majority (75-85%) being taken directly to the article they are looking for, all currently have to go through a useless page. Two meanings, where one is primary over the other, can and should normally be dealt with by a simple hatnote. Prolog (talk) 19:24, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per Prolog. The sporting term is clearly the primary topic and this will benefit readers. Per WP:TWODABS, if this article is moved, the dab page can be deleted and replaced with a hatnote. Jenks24 (talk) 06:17, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support move. With the move and an added hatnote, the people looking for the airline will get to the correct article with the same amount of clicks as they do now. The people looking for the sports term, however, will reach the correct article without having to go through a dab page. I don't see why the dab page is needed here at all. Jafeluv (talk) 23:01, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, primary topic, qualifier doesn't seem particularly helpful anyway (even if we were to start using deliberately explanatory titles).--Kotniski (talk) 07:16, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Well, since there's no dispute as to what the primary topic is, I've replaced the dab page with a redirect to here and a hatnote from here. The only question remaining is whether Flying Finn should redirect to Flying Finn (sports) or vice versa (normal practice, and the majority view here, is for vice versa).--Kotniski (talk) 07:23, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
      • In my experience a better solution for the dab page would be to move it under Flying Finn (disambiguation) and then delete it. That way the dab page remains easily restorable if at some point someone writes another article titled "Flying Finn (something)", and the history doesn't get mixed with the deleted revisions of this article. It's usually a good idea to keep the histories of unrelated pages separate. Jafeluv (talk) 12:29, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
