Hello! I will review this article. Yay! Basilisk4u (talk) 03:27, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Review

[edit]
Lead
  • "Folk Singer is a studio album by Muddy Waters..." Which album is it? Is it his third album?
    •  Done
  • Link Chess Records
    •  Done
  • "Waters plays acoustic guitar, backed by Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on acoustic guitar." Change to "The album features Waters on acoustic guitar, backed by Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on acoustic guitar."
    •  Done
  • "The album is Waters' first and his only all-acoustic album." Do you mean it is his debut album, or first all-acoustic album? If it is his first all-acoustic album, just say "Folk Singer is Waters' only all-acoustic album."
    •  Done
  • The word "album" is used a little too much in the first paragraph, try "record" occasionally
    •  Done
  • "Although not charted in any country, Folk Singer received critical acclaim..." Change to "Despite not charting in any country, Folk Singer received critical acclaim"
    •  Done
  • "...and the instrumentation" --> "...as well as the instrumentation" sounds a little better I think
    •  Done
Background
  • "Muddy Water's first recordings were for the Library of Congress in 1941, which included an acoustic version "I Be's Troubled", and he was recorded again in 1942." What does it mean to record "for" the Library of Congress? Also, how was he "recorded again" in 1942? Clarify this.
    •  removed
  • "Chess Records decided to record songs for Waters' studio album Folk Singer." This sounds a little strange, as if the record company is recording the songs and not Waters. Maybe "Chess Records encouraged Waters to record songs for a new studio album."
    •  Done
  • "Andrew Stephens, who played during Newport" What instrument did he play? And by Newport, do you mean At Newport 1960?
    •  to avoid repetition, I just put "bassists" at the end of that sentence. Yes, the next Newport took place years after this one.
  • "The latter became the bandleader soon after he received entry to the band." Do you mean Stephens? I thought that he was replaced by other members
    •  removed
  • "Pat Hare was convicted to life sentence" --> "Pat Hare was sentenced to life in prison"
    •  Done
  • Add a comma after "While in jail"
    •  Done
  • "Alcoholic" is a better word for "alcohol addict"
    •  Done
  • How did Lawhorn's narcolepsy affect the band?
    •  this is just a rumour that he suffered from narcolepsy. I don't think that was true, but if that would be the case, Waters would just replace him. Also, Waters often hired musicians; those who were busy in life were just replaced.
Recording
  • Link folk music
    •  Done
  • "Chess thus decided to record a more acoustic album with two acoustic guitarists." Maybe start this sentence with "In order to appeal to fans of folk music, Chess decided to record..."
    •  Done
  • "Guy played on all original songs, except the last song "Feel Like Going Home", together with Waters." What does the "together" part mean? Did he play on the song?
    • No, he played on all songs except Feel Like Going Home (Waters solo)
  • "Waters accepted the proposal to be backed by Guy, firstly, because of his latest panned performance in London, when he played on an electric screeching guitar, as he intended to perform in Europe in future, and secondly, because he wanted to attain the acoustic sound in the early years.[" --> Is "screeching" from a quote? If so, you could say "Waters accepted the proposal to feature Guy's acoustic guitar because of his recently panned performance in London in which his "screeching" guitar was not well-received, as well as his desire to recreate the acoustic sound of his early years."
    •  Done
  • "He intended to perform in Europe, including in London, the next month." Maybe you could add that he wished to restore his reputation after the bad performance in London? That is kind of the feeling I am getting from reading this, correct me if I am wrong.
    •  Done
  • Not sure if "hummings" is a word. Try "hums".
    •  Done
  • It says in other places in the article that the album is known for its high-quality sound. If you can find any information about the recording techniques used, that would be great. However, it is not required for GA.
    •  Unfortunately I could not find any information in the Gordon and the Chess Recordings book
Releases and tour
  • "The supporting tour through Europe, the second American Folk Blues Festival, began one month after the recording of Folk Singer." Was the tour's name the second American Folk Blues Festival?
    •  yes
Critical reception
  • What does "vital sound" mean? Maybe add a direct quote from the review for context.
    •  it is from the Allmusic review
References
  • Allmusic should not be italicized, as it is an online source.
    •  Done
  • Are the Rolling Stone citations from an article? Please add the title and other information
    •  I can not find this magazine :/
