Gundam Hammer[edit]

I'd like to add some information about the reference to Gundam in the Manga-style part of this episode around minute 12. In responce to Naota claiming he dosen't know what "Fooly Cooly" is Kamon (Naota's Dad) says "That's what it is. Naota's Gundam Hammer.", adding "It's that Tomino-Esque thing. Saying it's Gundam, but basicaly it's giant robot anime, right?". This is a reference to contradictory statements made by Yoshiyuki Tomino about Gundam's realism.

Originaly, Tomino claimed that Gundam was NOT "just another giant robot anime" and that is was intended to be a realistic represtation of the complex political and social impatcs of warfare and the humanity (or inhumanity) of man during times of desperation. Later, a weapon named the "Gundam Hammer" was introduced, suffice to say it was highly unrealistic. When questioned by fans he supposedly responded Gundam was "just a giant robot anime after all". Consequently, "Gundam Hammer" passed into the gundam fan's vocabulary as a word for a newly introduced element that blatenly contradicts previously held policy.

This is important to understanding the intentional ambiguity of the the phrase "Fooly Cooly", the title of the episode.

The problem is I can't find any references to secure these claims about Tomino statments about Gundam. I don't want to spread heresay on wikipedia, but i'm no longer sure this popular story about the origins of "Gundam" reference is true at all. Most of the pages I find on Google are about this scene in FLCL, and not about Gundam at all. The most compeling references I've found are the Urban Dictionary's Entry Gundam Hammer[1] (oh yea, Urban Dictionary, now there's a trustable source) or the google cache of Forum where the reference comes up in real usage of the phrase "Gundam Hammer" and is subsequently explained [2] of course, forum posts like this have their own set of problems when it comes to valid resources.

So I have a potentialy meaty addition to the article, but no way to reference or even truly verify it's validity. If anyone has any suggestions for a trustworth resource, I'd be realy glad to hear it.--LaughingMan42 14:16, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I just sort of skimmed over this, but I have to ask: that reference only lasted for a couple of seconds. Is it really that significant? -Litefantastic 17:07, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So, you're asking for justification? I was watching FLCL Episode 1, and heard the reference to Gundam clearly for the first time. Not knowing what it was, but being sure of how it related to the plot, I looked it up in wikipedia. No information. I found the info I was looking for on FLCL sites: it's a reference to an event in Gundam's development, and a phrase used by some Gundam fans. In this way, it's an early establishment of Kamon's unusual insite into current pop culture, as well as a hint about the meaning of the phrase "Fooly Cooly" itself. Having secured this information as fact in my own mind, I returned to Wikipedia hopes of enriching it with the information I had just retrived. At this step I ran into difficulty, as I had no solid sources, and original research is out of the question. The logical next step was to add my findings to the discusion page, and request help in finding a way to cite this theorecaly verifiable information in a way that meets wikipedia's quality standards. I cannot adequatly justify the relvence of the information, but I think it's worth mentioning somewhere in the page. If you're asking if it's worth commiting your time to helping me, I can only say that the choice to volunteer your time to aid in expanding the encyclopedia is entirely at your discretion.--LaughingMan42 12:11, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Skimmed over this too, but I'm on your wavelength now. Here's how I see it: 1) You found websites. Those are reference enough; see the FLCL article on how to properly cite a page. 2) You seem troubled by the notion that this was insufficiently significant, but I'm the proud creator of List of fictional Elvis Impersonators and I'd just like to know that if have trouble selling people on relevence, it won't come from this corner. I was only questioning whether or not getting the information you wanted was purposeful, but since you already have some, why not just throw it in there (citing, of course) and see what happens. -Litefantastic 18:06, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Flcl-1.jpg[edit]

Image:Flcl-1.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
