Sucked in

[edit]

Ladies and Gentlemen - why on Earth did we get sucked in by Tancred's claim that the soccer hall of fame has the exact same name as the real Australian Football Hall of Fame? I looked at Tancred's link to his so-called hall of fame, and this is what it says (direct copy):

FOOTBALL FEDERATION AUSTRALIA - FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME
Introduction Select Other InformationFull List Hall of Honour Hall of Champions Roll of Honour - Distinguished Medal of Excellence Roll of Honour - Meritorious Award of Distinction 1956 Olympic Team The 1974 Socceroos Honours Committee Criteria
For over one hundred years, Australians from all walks of life have been involved in soccer, dedicating themselves to all aspects of the game, from the highest echelons right down to the grass roots.
So at a meeting of Soccer Australia Commissioners on June 2, 1996, it was agreed in principle to form an independent committee to acknowledge and honour outstanding services to national soccer.
The committee was to establish criteria, consider nominations and work towards completion of the project.
The first meeting, on October 30, 1996 at Soccer House in Melbourne also decided to consider people who might be able to provide input or who could be nominated as members of the committee.
The inductees into the Australian Soccer Hall of Fame come from a wide range of walks of life, however they all have one thing in common; they have dedicated a large part of their lives to the development, growth, exposure and professionalism of the game in this country.
The Australian Soccer Hall of Fame Ceremony is set to become one of the major annual events in the soccer calendar.

You will all note you can see every name mentioned except Australian Football Hall of Fame (obviously). So why have we allowed the soccer fraternity to pull the wool over our eyes and allow them to use the name all of a sudden? If people love nil all results and want to dedicate a hall of fame to it, that is their business, but they should not seek to appropriate the name that already exists for Australia's own football code. I repeat, those that have been involved in this have been sucked in by a lie from someone with an obvious agenda. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 02:50, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

and reading through you "comments" you seem to have rather strong feelings about this as well. Did you miss the heading at the top of the page? FOOTBALL FEDERATION AUSTRALIA - FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME? I have spoken with the FA, and this is what they are calling the hall of fame.Tancred 21:30, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/public/article/show.asp?articleid=9617&menuItemID=10 shows that the FA are now using Football hall of Fame - the page you have cut and pasted from above is out of date.Tancred 21:38, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page move

[edit]

According to the Australian Trade Mark On-line Search System, "Australian Football Hall of Fame" is trademark number 898836, registered to the Australian Football League. Under Australian trademark law, the AFL has exclusive rights to the phrase, and it would be illegal for the FFA to use the name for their Hall of Fame or to market themselves using the phrase. This page will now be moved back to Australian Soccer Hall of Fame. Snottygobble 04:07, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Let me quot from the official website "The Australian Soccer Hall of Fame Ceremony is set to become one of the major annual events in the soccer calendar." That says to me that that is what they still call it and so should we. Enough of this Football can only mean Soccer shit. Xtra 23:51, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I explained above, having spoken to the FA, they are using the team Football Federation Australia Football Hall of Fame. The page Xtra has linked to is out of date. I am also concerned by the amount of abuse directed towards football fans on this page. Tancred 00:22, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can you provide a reference for this please. Right now google is getting 5 hits for "Football Federation Australia Football Hall of Fame", and 207 hits for "Australian Soccer Hall of Fame". Snottygobble 00:53, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing against you Tancred, in fact I rather like the name, remembering that Tancred was the last of the great Norman kings of Sicily. But aren't you being a little bit misleading above? Haven't you forgotten to put the hyphen in Football Federation Australia Football Hall of Fame, i.e. a hyphen between the words Australia and Football. Whichever way you look at it, there is only one Australian Football Hall of Fame, as Snottygobble has pointed out, they own the name, no one else can use it, that is the end of the story. We are not saying that you shouldn't have an instiution to commemmorate all your nil all draws, we are simply saying that you should use the correct title of that institution. Otherwise, I really have nothing against soccer and I hope that Palermo can win their group of 16 tie against Schalke in the UEFA cup. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 01:35, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I observed a while ago, it was originally called the ASHoF, but now appears under the heading FFA - FHoF on their website, although they haven't bothered changing any of the wording of the text, which was written when it was established. I suggested naming the article "Football Hall of Fame (Australia)" or "... (Australian soccer)", since the FFA seems to call it the FHoF. However, links were provided to other parts of the FFA site, where it was indeed called "the AFHoF", so I moved it to "Australian Football Hall of Fame (soccer)". It seems that the FFA do at least refer to it as the AFHoF, as I said stupidly, and in fact illegally. We should probably stick to official names, either including the hyphen, or as Football Hall of Fame (Australia/Football Federation Australia) or something like that. Official name

[edit]

I only just followed the link to the official web site of the hall of fame, and noticed that it is simply called Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame. Shouldn't this article have the official name? It seems to me that someone has made up what they think the name should be. --Happy Winger (talk) 01:53, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's changed a few times. On the FFA website it's simply referred to as Football Hall of Fame.[1] Hack (talk) 02:13, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
