"Golaço?"[edit]

Could someone please explain to me why it's spelled this way? Needless to say, Italian isn't spelled this way, and the Spanish "golaco" is said with a soft "c," as in "golaso." Wannabe rockstar (talk) 16:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While the Portuguese for "great goal" might very well be Golaço! (I honestly couldn't say one way or t'other); however, there is no doubting that what is being said in the soundbite is actually Golaccio!. This is the English word goal, which has been adopted into Italian and given Italian pronunciation (with an "open" O, as in the English word brolly) and spelling; and to which has been added the Italian suffix -accio (pronounced atcho), which means "bad" or "poorly done". You will recall that the commentator is stretching out the vowel in gol to nearly three seconds -- before ending on -accio. Evidently he thinks the ball is going in the net, only for fate to intervene, i.e., it hits a post, or is saved, or the goal is otherwise frustrated.
