Foras na Gaeilge → Institute of Irish — Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English)
— V = I * R (talk to Ω) 20:34, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose. There is no such organisation as "Institute of Irish". The current title of this article complies with both WP:EN and WP:IMOS: "Foras na Gaeilge" is the only name used in English-language contexts to refer to the topic of this article.--Kwekubo (talk) 23:30, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Support as per WP:ENGLISH.--Labattblueboy (talk) 04:29, 4 December 2009 (UTC)- Reject as per the article on Irish naming. There is no such thing as "institute of Irish". It is exclusively known as Foras na Gaeilge in both English and Irish in Ireland. The Gaelic name should be used as per WP:IMOSComhreir (talk) 07:17, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose - per WP:COMMONNAME (in English). Mooretwin (talk) 09:15, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose until some evidence of the relative usage of the two in English is given. Without that, this request seems to be based on a clear misunderstanding of WP:UE. Knepflerle (talk) 09:26, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Note that the English title is given in the article (right there in the lead!). Continuing to use the Gaelic title here in en.wikipedia seems just as inappropriate as using an English title on ga.wikipedia.
— V = I * R (talk to Ω) 09:55, 10 December 2009 (UTC)- Once again, there is no English title for this organisation. There are multiple ways the name could potentially be translated into English - for example, I think "Irish Language Agency" is closer to the intended meaning - but it's not our place to decide what something should be named when there is clearly established precedent in English-language usage. --Kwekubo (talk) 11:17, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

- Strong Oppose We can't just make up a name in English. BigDunc 11:49, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Strong Oppose - per WP:COMMONNAME and per WP:IMOS. See also Áras an Uachtaráin, Bord Gáis, Bord na Móna, An Bord Pleanála, Bus Éireann, Dáil Éireann, Fáilte Ireland, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Garda Síochána, Luas, Oireachtas, Raidió Teilifís Éireann, Seanad Éireann, Sinn Féin, Tánaiste and Taoiseach. These are the common names of these various entities in the English language in Ireland, to use the English language translation of their common name is possibly WP:OR. Also, this is not an Irish language issue, the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany sits at Bundestag on the English language wikipedia not German Parliament. Snappy (talk) 16:08, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose The organization is never referred to in Ireland by any English-language name. 174.16.17.50 (talk) 02:52, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Support English speaking/reading laymen (like me), can't read or pronounce 'Foras na Gaeilge'. GoodDay (talk) 18:40, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Your ignorance GoodDay is not a reason to change the name of an article, So do we just make a name up like is happening here the Institute of Irish this is beyond a joke. BigDunc 19:34, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I've explained my 'vote' & won't be altering it. I'll leave it up to the closing administrator, to decide weither my 'vote' is valid or not. GoodDay (talk) 19:41, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Moving this article to Institute of Irish would constitute original research. The organisation has never been known by such a name, and moreover there are several other potential ways "Foras na Gaeilge" could be translated into English. --Kwekubo (talk) 19:37, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

- I'd agree to having it moved to the correct 'english' version. GoodDay (talk) 20:28, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- What correct English version GD? This is the name of the organisation. BigDunc 20:34, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not altering my 'vote'. If an administrator views it as invalid? so be it. GoodDay (talk) 20:36, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- What correct English version GD? This is the name of the organisation. BigDunc 20:34, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'd agree to having it moved to the correct 'english' version. GoodDay (talk) 20:28, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Strong oppose WP:COMMONNAME. The organisation is always referred to as Foras na Gaeilge when speaking in English. --rannṗáirtí anaiṫnid (coṁrá) 20:39, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose There is no such organisation as the "Institute for Irish" so it cannot be the WP:COMMONAME. Fribbler (talk) 20:53, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose Per WP:COMMONNAME. This is getting silly. --Domer48'fenian' 20:59, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose Per almost everyone above. Jack forbes (talk) 21:06, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose Per WP:COMMONNAME, as above. Hohenloh + 00:11, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Unfamiliarity with, or ignorance of, a word or term should not be sufficient reason to change it. This is an encyclopaedia; we should expect to encounter words that are beyond the limits of our knowledge. Daicaregos (talk) 13:04, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose. It would appear the correct name in English is still Foras na Gaeilge. Contrast, for example, the Welsh Language Board, which has two names. 81.111.114.131 (talk) 22:10, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
