"Islamophobia" is a Disputed Term[edit]

Article does not reflect the controversy regarding this term and its use, especially when it is used to browbeat legitimate criticism of Islam and its history. Please refer to the article on Islamophobia which includes the views of such critics as Salmon Rushdie. Scott Adler (talk) 09:22, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unless there is specific criticism of the group's usage of the term then it is irrelevant and a wikilink to the term would do. Nil Einne (talk) 11:57, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur that the term "islamophobia" should not be used in that it is a pseudo-scientific term for which no recognized psychiatric disorder has been identified. Its use cheapens science and is a service to no one. Linking to a second page is attempt to sweep the problem under the rug. 66.74.34.204 (talk) 13:42, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Anon.[reply]

What on earth are you talking about? This is an article about a group called "Forum Against Islamophobia and Racism". It is not our place to decide whether the groups usage of a term is appropriate or not. Until and unless there are sources speficially critising the groups usage of the term, then it is inappropriate for us to provide commentry on the term in this article. As per the Islamophobia article and the associated talk page discussion, there has been an official acceptance of the term by international authorities and organisations (refer to the Stockholm International Forum on Combating Intolerance in 2001), by the vast majority of academics and sociologists, as well as the mainstream media (cf. New Muslims in the European Context: The Experience of Scandinavian Converts - p. 53, Brill 2004, and Encyclopedia of Race and Ethnic studies p. 218). The European Union, in particular, has produced numerous reports and statistics on Islamophobia and Antisemitism. That some political commentators attack its usage doesn't delegitimise the term in any way, neither does its misuse ('antisemitism' and 'xenophobia' are epithets often misused too). But I also agree that this isn't the place to debate the term either. The reliable sources used in the article address the issue as a matter of fact. ITAQALLAH 17:00, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
