Framycetin is an antibiotic useful primarily in infections involving aerobic bacteria. It is not active against fungi, viruses and most kinds of anaerobic bacteria. The drug affects enteric bacteria and other eubacteria. It is used as skin ointment and eye drops and ointment. The ophthalmic product finds major use for the prophylaxis of ocular infections following foreign body removal and is also used in treatment of bacterial blepharitis, bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal injuries, corneal ulcers and meibomianitis.
