Lao king asked for French protection in place of Siamese rule

[edit]

This is true, but we not only need a reference, but which king.—Pawyilee (talk) 06:23, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Laos was not unified under a single ruler at the time. It's probably referring to King Oun Kham of Luang Prabang. The History of Laos to 1945 article (also lacking a citation) says:

When Luang Phrabāng was attacked by Tai [Haw?] tribespeople from the hills, and the Siamese representatives fled, it was Pavie who organised the defence of the town and rescued the elderly King Oun Kham. The king was so grateful that he asked for French protection in place of Siamese rule.
