The Franche-Comté was transferred from France to the House of Hapsburg and Burgundy in 1493, not in 1481.The French crown, in turn, had taken over the County after the death in battle of the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold in 1477. To add a little bit more about the meaning of Franche-Comté: The County was producing salt at this time in Salins-les-Bains, Arc-et-Senans and in some other places (We can see the latin root of "sal" in Salins and in Senans). During the Middle-Age, there was a particular tax on salt called the Gabelle, as Franche-Comté people were working in salt mining they were exempted of this tax so the county was free of taxes (at least for salt). "Free County" nonsense[edit]

"Free County" is a literal translation of Franche-Comté into English.
But in English we call this region Franche-Comté, the same as the French do.
Can you cite an English language book using "Free County"?
