Overall it sure is but what you added does not quite square with Taíno#Population_decline. Dunno if that article has a better ref but according to that page, there were 60,000 some left in 1519. Akerbeltz (talk) 22:25, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't say anything about Jamaica in particular. But it gives Bartolomé de las Casas as a source - but for the total number of Tainos on Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and San Juan. Bartolomé is himself the source of the claim about Francisco de Garay and the Tainos in Jamaica and the near extinction of Jamaican natives in 1516. ·Maunus·ƛ· 23:08, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In his 1516 memorial de remedios para las Indias Las Casas writes: "En Jamaica es asimismo necesario que vuestra reverendísima señoria mande deshacer una compañia que tiene hecha S. A. con uno que allí fue que se llama Francisco de Garay la cual es en gran diminución de los indios: porque no podrá ser sino que por aprovechar o dejar de aprovechar de S.A. ha de aprovechar asi . y no puede ser sin matar muchos indios especialmente que dicen que lleva licencia para sacallos de la dicha isla y traellos a la de Cuba a coger oro. y luego son muertos desta y de otras maneras que allí sucederán."·Maunus·ƛ· 23:15, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
