Freddie Starr's year of birth[edit]

The IMDB link at [1] says that Freddie Starr was born in 1944, but his autobiography says that he was born in 1943. The date given in the autobiography is taken as the reference source for the Wikipedia article.--Ianmacm 21:23, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Still looking for a reliable source on the date of birth. Many sources say 9 January, but this could be wrong. This needs to be cleared up.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:10, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper interview with Freddie Starr[edit]

In the 20 July 2007 edition of the Herald Express, Freddie Starr gives a revealing interview. He says that his father was violent and broke his legs, which is something that he does not say in his autobiography Unwrapped. The interview also says that Starr now lives near Warwick Castle in the West Midlands. Several of the trivia points at the bottom of the article have been removed, partly because they are not particularly notable, and partly because they are unsourced and could be wrong.--Ianmacm 18:11, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Freddie Starr's official website[edit]

Starr's official website www.freddiestarr.com has been offline for quite a while now and has been removed from the links at the bottom of the article. It is unclear why it is offline and whether it will return. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 22:46, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's back, but with a new address: http://www.freddiestarr.moonfruit.com/ . --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:43, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ian, I am sure you know - but the website is offline and no longer on the article anyway. Cheers. Glaaaastonbury88 (talk) 18:14, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish[edit]

Born of a Jewish mother, would make Starr ethnic Jewish? [2] Just another aspect to the man. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.29.233.119 (talk) 19:15, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is interesting that Freddie Starr mentions in this Times interview that his mother was Jewish and from Germany. However, describing Starr as "ethnic Jewish" needs some caution, and it would be better to quote from the article directly than to draw conclusions from it.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:44, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted the original edit precisely because Starr described his mother as Jewish, which I felt he wouldn't do if he considered himself to be Jewish. There don't appear to be any reliable sources to back up the assertion, and in one Independent article he's even described as a Goy. His mother's ethnicity could form part of an expanded section on his background. Jonobennett (talk) 10:17, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Starr is quoted describing his jewish mother. Having a jewish mother makes you a jew (if only an ethnic jew). Mention of Matthew Norman and mindreading Freddie Starr (lol) is just strawman nonsense. Starr, a supreme source, makes his intention crystal clear; my mother was a jew, ergo i am a jew. Its your pretend encyclopedia, do what you want! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.29.233.119 (talk) 20:18, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The phrase "ethnic Jewish" is hard to define. What seems to be the point of reference here is Jewish religious law, specifically the matrilineal principle in Mishnah (Kiddushin 3:12).[3]. Other factors would be involved in this situation, such as whether Freddie Starr considered himself to be a practicing member of the Jewish faith. This would need clarification before labelling Freddie Starr as Jewish on the basis of a remark that he made in a newspaper interview.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:42, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"such as whether Freddie Starr considered himself to be a practicing member of the Jewish faith." What on earth does that have to do with his ethnicity? 195.13.252.20 (talk) 09:41, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia articles do not refer to a person's race or religious beliefs unless they are reliably sourced and clearly relevant to the reader's understanding of the subject.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:59, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Genre?[edit]

Is stand-up a 'genre'? Should that read Ribaldry or something? Mannafredo (talk) 09:03, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Having watched Starr live, I would not argue with the stand-up genre, although he also sings during the act. Genre is notoriously subjective and should usually be sourced, but "stand-up" is broadly OK. Starr's act is not overtly sexual or crude, although it does have some near the knuckle material.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:11, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why is place of death listed?[edit]

He is still alive yet place of death is listed as Liverpool in the info box.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.112.78.10 (talk) 23:29, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Done. Thanks for pointing this out. His appearance on "I'm a Celebrity" led to a spate of vandalism.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 01:32, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Libel[edit]

The thread has been locked but the last paragraph contains a very serious libel. Please remove immediately.

Thor Halland — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.42.64.52 (talk) 03:32, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Starr denies flat out that he was involved in the Jimmy Savile/Gary Glitter saga, and this has now appeared in reliable sources.[4] One of the problems with the allegation is that Starr worked for ITV in the 1970s, so it is unlikely that he was in a BBC dressing room unless he was appearing in a BBC show. Glitter is known to have been a guest on Clunk Click, Starr is not.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:37, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
He was lying. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2214785/Freddie-Starr-forced-admit-mistaken-TV-footage-unearthed-1974.html 84.237.176.122 (talk) 21:38, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Channel 4 News unearthed a video recording of Starr appearing on Clunk Click in 1974.[5] Starr now admits that he was mistaken, but denied the sexual assault allegation in a statement from his lawyer.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:15, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Later career[edit]

In December 2011, Freddie Starr became the official patron of Yorkshire Children's Trust (previously named Kidz Foundation), a charity that provides grants to families with long-term sick or disabled children.[17]

Freddie is not a patron of this charity, can it be removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ukwiddy (talkcontribs) 14:50, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bit of a puzzle here. The Google cached version of the page shows Starr as a patron, but the current version has only Billy Pearce. Removed Starr, it may be more accurate to say that he is no longer a patron.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:46, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Erotic Film[edit]

This may sound a bit off, but he was in a pornographic film that may deserve a mention? I can probably find a sensible source but I'm not sure if this is suitable to be included. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harry McThompson (talkcontribs) 22:25, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is no mention of this in his IMDb profile, or a Google search. If he had done this, the tabloids would probably have dragged it up by now, eg Peter Duncan (actor).--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:53, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Of course there isn't anything on IMDB it's a bit of a hidden secret. In all fairness it might not be him but if you want to continue this further I can email you the link privately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harry McThompson (talkcontribs) 13:35, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth and Midniters[edit]

Huyton was removed. In Unwrapped Chapter One, Starr says "I was born Frederick Fowell at Number 10, Ulster Road, Liverpool in 1943." Ulster Road is in the L13 postcode area, while Huyton is L14 and 36.

Starr's Merseybeat pop group was Freddie and the Midniters [sic]. Image of Starr and the group here.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:47, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bit of a puzzle, as the Decca singles use the spelling Midnighters.[6] The band seems to have used both spellings, so an explanatory note has been added.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:22, 12 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Legal action over 1974 Clunk Click claims[edit]

It is reported that Starr is taking legal action against the woman who accused him of molesting her on Clunk Click. It looks like it is at an early stage, but this needs to be watched for any significant developments.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:40, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • "The Daily Mail has stated that Starr is suing for damages against Karin Ward for "Slander and Malicious Falsehood." An editor of the Freddie Starr article has cited Rupert Murdoch's sleazoid "The Sun" as a credible source, So why isn't "The Daily Mail" article's information cited???

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2408334/Comedian-Freddie-Starr-70-suing-woman-claimed-molested-BBC-dressing-room-14.htmlUser:JCHeverly 00:12, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As a general rule, editing and talk page discussion are better than templates. Neither the Daily Mail nor The Sun is an ideal source (in fact, none of the UK tabloids are ideal sources where WP:BLP is concerned). The text of the Mail article makes clear that it is basically rehashing the Sunday Mirror article with the same information. Karin Ward is not currently named in the article per WP:BLPNAME, although she did allow herself to be interviewed in the context of the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal. The Mirror and the Mail articles are the only ones mentioning this at the moment. Since there is an element of WP:CRYSTAL and no actual court action appears to have taken place, there is a question of whether this needs to be mentioned until things become clearer.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:08, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Sunday Mirror article says that Starr "has lodged the civil action at London’s High Court and if successful could win damages running into tens of thousands of pounds". The key word here is "if". Assuming that Starr has filed papers at the High Court, what he has done is to announce an intention to pursue the matter in court. Sometimes these things fizzle out, only time will tell. If he did appear in court, it would undoubtedly be reported by the BBC and other reliable sources. It is all rather too speculative at the moment.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:26, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is further coverage here, in which Karin Ward says that she received legal documents on 3 September 2013. The important thing is that none of this has gone to court; until it does there is too much WP:CRYSTAL here.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 21:06, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • It has really turned into a click CLUNK, hasn't it??? Although the aforementioned was an ITV programme, right? Also, in the ITV programme "Jimmy Savile: Exposed", I believe it was Karin Ward who said that she distinctly remembered being felt up by Freddie Starr, "because he smelled like my step-father." Just saying.User:JCHeverly 00:57, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is currently in court.[7]. There may be an outcome soon.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:52, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

new arrest[edit]

added it and was changed back. I dont agree that its stale as he was arrested again this week! But will leave it for now re any developments as ian is a much better and fairer editor than me, sorry Ian.Honest-john (talk) 10:19, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Interview in Mail on Sunday[edit]

Starr has given an extensive interview to the Mail on Sunday.[8] He opens up about how Operation Yewtree and the Karin Ward libel case have pretty much ruined him. Since it is in the Mail it is not an ideal source, but it is worth reading.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:08, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Ian, Would it be wrong to have something on the page somewhere that reflects Freddie's views that the Op ruined him? I would say it is objectionably clear that it contributed to his ill health. Cheers :) Glaaaastonbury88 (talk) 18:19, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Death of Freddie Starr[edit]

Should this have a section of its own / any edits needed to rest of the wiki page due to death? — Preceding unsigned comment added by InfodudeUK (talkcontribs) 17:38, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

His death is now in the article. It is also the front page lead story in three of the newspapers today.[9] "Freddie Starr joins his hamster" in The Sun is the pick of the bunch.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:28, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not Jewish[edit]

Closing discussion started by banned User:HarveyCarter.
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

His mother was not Jewish. (86.159.61.223 (talk) 19:34, 10 May 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Starr is identified in the article as making this claim. As he was not the most reliable of people, this might well be doubted, but I tried to find a source disputing his claim without success. It is reasonable to include the claim for now, unless someone can definitively cite a reliable source which conclusively demonstrates the opposite. Philip Cross (talk) 19:41, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have looked Starr and his family up in the England/Wales Birth, Marriage and Death Registers c/o this site https://www.freebmd.org.uk. It appears that Starr's mother was Hilda M. Fiehnen (sometimes spelled 'Feihnen') and she was born in the Toxeth Park district in 1917. Her mother's maiden name is given as 'Schuhmacher'. This certainly indicates German (and possibly Jewish) ancestry, but Starr's mother was plainly not an immigrant/refugee from Germany as he implied. I also note that she appears with him on an episode of 'This is Your Life' (YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntWkiyerinw) and she speaks English with a Liverpool accent. Andromer2 (talk) 22:08, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Care[edit]

I tried looking up to see if there was an article to cover the concept of 'local authority care' familiar to inhabitants of the UK. The nearest I could find was Congregate care, so I added a wikilink to that. Should someone find a better wikilink, please re-edit the article. Harfarhs (talk) 10:23, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Midniters again[edit]

In his autobiography Unwrapped, Starr uses only the spelling "Midniters".[10] Assuming that he actually read the book prior to its publication, he must have been happy that it was correct. I'm aware that this 45 RPM single says "Midnighters". Maybe they or Brian Epstein or Joe Meek changed it at some point, but both spellings seem to have been used. This is how Gorden Kaye came about.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:14, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hamster[edit]

Without checking the whole edit history, I have added “his friend” as Vince McCaffrey is otherwise unexplained in the article. Since the story is about Vince’s girlfriend and her hamster, describing the location as his home rather than hers is sexist. The cited source, which is secondary, says he was staying with his friend, whose girlfriend’s hamster he ate when refused a sandwich, without explaining why she was at the house. If she and her hamster were also visitors, someone can edit that in instead. Either way, she should not be defined by her male partner. Freddie Orrell (talk) 08:07, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Violence[edit]

No reference to the vivid allegations made by at least 2 of his wives and a fiance of domestic violence including cigarette burns and blows to the abdomen while pregnant? No mention of his extensive criminal record and spells inside during the 1960s? 81.136.94.19 (talk) 07:03, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It all comes down to reliable sourcing. Even though Starr is dead, it is not open season to make claims that can only be sourced to tabloid newspapers.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:36, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with @Ianmacm. Also I have never seen any proof about him being "inside" (I presume you are alluding to prison) at all. Can you list a source please? Cheers. Glaaaastonbury88 (talk) 18:24, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
