Local history

Does any body know about local history in this area? I've added a little but could do with more - particularly older stuff, like the origins of the name. I'm assuming it's to do with marsh land and the River Lea (note: surrouding areas Enfield Lock, Enfield Wash). Thanks Rogwan 20:36, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WWII Teacher Death

I attended Chesterfield School until 2000, and we were always told that the children had all been in a shelter. The story was that she'd left her bag in a classroom and had been back to get it when the bomb hit, it was used as an example of why we shouldn't waste time gathering belongings during a fire alarm. I was told the same thing, which must have been in the early 1990s. They also said that there was a shelter under what is now (or may longer be) the carpark for teachers that backs on to Chesterfield Road. This may be worth a mention if it can be verified. Rogwan 19:16, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, I read the reference to Chesterfield Road School as being in the Borough of Freezywater. I was born in Bedford Cresent in 1946 and my knowledge of one of the smallest Counties in England is that there has never been a school in the Borough. St Georges has always been in Enfield Wash and Chesterfield has always been in Enfield Lock. My Grand Father, Mother, Uncle & younger brother worked at the Small Arms, the common name for those who worked there was Lockies. My Mother, Father, Step Father, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins 2 brothers & myself all went to Chesters, so we are now talking about nearly 100 yrs of the schools history in 1 family. I went to the Schools Centenary some 15 yrs ago and purchased the Centenary booklet, I am on the front cover along with the rest of my class and Mr Abbott, Headmaster, the woman is I recall Miss Green head Mistress of the Infants. A great School that holds many fond memory's. Theres to my recollection only one important building in Freezywater, that being The Gun & Magpie PH, the best pub in Freezywater, as it's the ONLY ONE. I know boundries have changed over the years, but I do remember a sign which informed you that you were entering the borough of Freezywater about 1 hundred yards before Bullsmoor Lane heading south from Waltham Cross and the other that said you were entering the Borough of Enfield Wash that was by Holmwood Garage, ( now a block of flats ) about 2 hunderd yard before you got to St. Georges Church heading south to Ordnance Road. Waltham Cross
