Wrong on sideways movement[edit]

"In addition the connecting and coupling rods, through which the steam pressure and linear forces from the steam pistons are translated into the rotation of the wheels via the crank pins, also have to be able to move sideways. " - no: the cranks are somewhat wider;but the rods do not move sideways at all (except minimally due to play in the bearings). --User:Haraldmmueller 20:51, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

German Wikipedia has this: "Dies erfordert neben der verschieblichen Lagerung der einzelnen Achse auch die Möglichkeit zu seitlichen Verschiebungen für die Treib- und Kuppelstangen, mittels derer der Dampfdruck und die lineare Kraft des Dampfkolbens am Kurbelzapfen in die Raddrehbewegung umgesetzt wird." You are right ... and I would similarly argue that the German Wikipedia is wrong. But I have to admit that it may be useful to have sideway movement. However, the original Gölsdorf drawings did not have this, AFAIK, and I think it was missing from at least some Gölsdorf's engines - but I have to check this. --User:Haraldmmueller 10:59, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a more detailed picture of the important parts - I'll take any suggestions to improve it so that it can be used in the article instead of the current rough diagram. Niederstraßer's "Leitfaden für den Dampflokomotivdienst" and A.Giesl-Gieslingen's "Lokomotivathleten" contain some additional text which explains this exactly as in my drawing; but have additional details on the use of ball-shaped pins and additional joints on some 6-axle engines (kkStB 100). --User:Haraldmmueller 08:35, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
