Request for changes[edit]

Hi I have a conflict of interest and on behalf of G42 would like to request the following changes be made to this article to update and improve the content.

Firstly, the article should be renamed to G42 (company). The name Group 42 was previously used but G42 is the modern name used to describe the company in all press and subsidiary names. I can submit a page move request as well if that is sensible but it seemed logical to request this as part of my wider request seeing as there is also a need to replace the mentions of Group 42 in the rest of the article with "G42".

Secondly, the article is missing a lot of the enterprises and joint ventures, which has made other information outdated as well. The article needs considerable expansion, but as a start, can the introduction and Corporate history section be updated (replacing the existing text of these sections) to read as follows?:

G42 (previously known as Group42) is a technology holding company based in the UAE. It has multiple vertical businesses under its structure including oil and gas, smart cities, healthcare, and geospatial intelligence.
Corporate history
G42 was founded in 2018 (this previously read 2017, which is not correct, source: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/abu-dhabis-g42-forms-big-data-jv-with-israeli-defence-company-rafael-2021-04-19/) and is based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It comprises a multidisciplinary and diverse team of data scientists and engineers. G42 is chaired by the National Security Advisor of UAE, Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Peng Xiao is the Group CEO.   • Presight

I have wording and sources to provide proper subsections on these but for now it would be good to have them visible at a glance.

Finally, the "Partnership" section is also very out of date. For now, I suggest renaming it and splitting it into two separate sections, "Portfolio companies" containing Bayanat from the existing list, and "Partnerships and initiatives", containing Adalytyx, BGI Group, Rafael and IAI, and ToTok. Nanoscent and Alibaba Cloud can be removed as they were respectively a short-term collaboration and a small event from 2019 and not relevant for this article. Again, I have suggestions for expanding these lists but as a start having these in two separate, alphabetical lists would be easier for a reader to navigate.

@Spintendo thanks for responding, I have reviewed the changes made as you suggested. Thank you @Ptrnext for making those amends, especially the rename.
It would be helpful if you or Ptrnext could elaborate on why some of the changes have not been enacted. I have tried to follow neutral point of view recommendations for tone and have provided reliable sources where they would be necessary, so I'm not sure what the objection is, or if it was just an ommission and Ptrnext thought that other editors might chip in on the other parts?
Obviously you are all volunteers and so I appreciate the time you take to answer requests on topics that likely don't hold much interest for you, but as I am discouraged from adding material without raising a request, it would be helpful to know if there is a genuine objection or if I could just be adding the material myself if it does not violate community guidelines.
As the rearranging of the Partnership section is mostly just moving content around, which I can imagine is tedious when answering requests, would it be acceptable if I made this change myself to show the proposed restructuring? Thanks Oddoso (talk) 11:49, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Oddoso, yes, I only got around to implement the trivial ones. I noticed some basic changes were questionable (e.g. the 20,000 employees figure was for M42, not G42, according to your citation; not sure why you decided to remove the word controlled from "controlled and chaired by Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan" when he is the controlling shareholder.) When I have time, I can look at the remaining requests. If you prefer, you can open up the edit request again, so others can jump in possibly earlier than I can. To answer your questions, your (better) citation wasn't published when I was looking for a citation originally and because I already had one I wasn't looking for a new one to confirm this statistic when I submitted this request.
Secondly my proposed text for the Introduction and Corporate History section are more aimed at: indicating the up to date areas G42 works in; correcting applied versus fundamental research and not just focusing on IIAI when other portfolio companies contribute; and adding the CEO and two notable investors in. "controlled" can be kept in if you consider that is a better description. This sentence in particular needs updating: "The organization is oriented to development of AI industries in the government sector, healthcare, finance, oil and gas, aviation and hospitality". "oriented to development" sounds a bit promotional and not very grammatical which is why I phrased my proposed addition differently.
Could the following information be incorporated into your Cerebras addition?: "The planned network of supercomputers is called Condor Galaxy and will have combined 36 ExaFLOPs of AI compute, sufficient to impact the world wide inventory of AI compute." With regards to the companies that are in collaboration with the subject company, If you could provide the wikilinks for these companies in your reply message below, I think it would be important to establish their notability before mentioning them in the article. Hello, I implemented some of the changes. The change to the lede needs to be supported by sources, so I haven't done that. The infobox does not have a 'portfolio company' field, so I have left the subsidiary field as is (I do see G42 Healthcare referred to as a subsidiary in sources). Hi @Ptrnext and @Spintendo, thanks again for reviewing this. Ptrnext, regarding citations for the introduction, I believe that these are not required under MOS:LEADCITE? Hopefully my suggested additions below to the partnership list can speak for these. Spintendo, I have included wikilinks wherever there was an article to link to.
There are 7 portfolio companies and 10 partnerships to consider for inclusion (unfortunately the article is very out of date) so for ease of reading I will put these into two sections on this Talk page, "Portfolio companies", and "Partnerships and initiatives", reflecting the current article structure. I think the existing bullet points in the "portfolio companies" section would be more practical if converted to Level 3 headings, with associated partnerships of these companies listed as bullet points within these, so I have formatted them accordingly. Existing citations are indicated here by their current number in square brackets, new ones in supertext.

Hi Oddoso, your proposed change to the lead included the addition of "smart cities" which is not mentioned or sourced anywhere in the body, so we can't just add it. I will add those templates as requested. On your question, AIQ is a joint venture with ADNOC, so that should account for the oil and gas aspect (along with the Schlumberger efforts), and Injazat, G42 Cloud and Bayanat through TXAI all contribute to the smart cities vertical. The current version of the page has no mentions of ADNOC/AIQ or how G42 Cloud/Injazat/Bayanat explicitly contribute to smart cities vertical. Your request below covers the ADNOC/AIQ aspect, but the smart cities vertical still needs to be explained and referenced before it can be added to the lead.   • Oxford Nanopore: G42 is one of Oxford Nanopore’s largest shareholders and customers, with a reported stake of 5.4%. G42 and Oxford Nanopore signed the $68 million contract for 36 months in 2021.[5] In 2022 G42 Healthcare signed a distribution agreement with Oxford Nanopore as a channel partner for their DNA/RNA sequencing products across GCC countries.[6][7]
  • Sheba Medical Center: In 2022 G42 Healthcare announced a partnership with Sheba Medical Center in Israel to cooperate on research and clinical trials.[8]

AIQ

  • 42XFund: In 2022 G42 set up a $10 billion fund focused on technology investments in sectors from communications, mobility, renewables, and healthcare. The fund was formed in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Growth Fund.[25]
  • ADAA: G42 hosts the data center for the Abu Dhabi Accountability Authority (ADAA). The shift was carried out in 2021.[26]
  • Applied AI Company: In 2022 G42 invested in London-based AI startup The Applied AI Co. (AAICO).[27]
  • Adalytyx: On 23 December 2019 G42 announced signing an agreement of strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADDH) for the establishment of a joint venture called Adalytyx.[13]
  • Benya Technologies: During GITEX Global 2022 G42 signed a partnership with digital and ICT infrastructure provider Benya Technologies, gaining a seat on Benya’s Board of Directors.[28]
  • BGI Group: G42 was reported to have donated Chinese-made Covid testing kits to Nevada. These testing kits were objected to by the US intelligence and security officials, who raised concerns over privacy risks, citing that the gene-sequencing machines of the BGI Group could misuse the patients’ DNA. G42 is also reportedly working with BGI on a project for collecting genetic data of the UAE citizens to “generate the highest quality, most comprehensive genome data”.[14][15]
  • Cerebras: Cerebras partnered with G42 to deploy its AI supercomputers to create chatbots and to analyze genomic and preventive care data. In July 2023, G42 agreed to pay around $100 million to purchase the first of potentially nine supercomputers from Cerebras, each of which capable of 4 exaflops of compute.[16][17][18]
  • Instadeep: In 2023 G42 invested in the Series B funding round of Tunisian AI company InstaDeep.[29]
  • Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1: As of 2023 G42 has a sponsorship deal with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1, with the aim of using AI to improve the performance of the team in exchange for branding on the Mercedes car and helmets.[30][31]
  • Microsoft: In 2023 G42 and Microsoft signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate across multiple sectors, including healthcare, energy, digital transformation in the public sector, financial service and the environment in the UAE.[32]
  • OceanX: In 2022 G42 partnered with non-profit OceanX to deploy its cloud infrastructure and services and Bayanat’s remote sensing drone systems to support ocean research.[33]
  • Rafael and IAI: On 2 July 2020, G42 announced the signing a memorandum of understanding with two Israeli defense groups – Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries – to research and develop methods to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Israeli defense firms’ subsidiary Elta confirmed the agreement.[19][20]
  • Schlumberger: In 2020 G42 and AIQ, its joint venture with ADNOC, joined with Schlumberger to develop and offer AI products aimed at the oil and gas industry.[34][35]
  • ToTok: Group 42 was a registered shareholder of the free messaging, video, and voice calling mobile application, ToTok. The application was accused of being "used by the government of the United Arab Emirates to try to track every conversation, movement, relationship, appointment, sound and image of those who install it," in a New York Times exposé in December 2019.[21] Following the allegations, the application was removed by Apple and Google from their application stores. [note: G42 does not have a connection to Dark Matter, so I have suggested removing the related content]
  • UAE Team Emirates: From 2021 G42 has sponsored the elite-level cycling squad UAE Team Emirates.[36]

In 2023, G42 launched M42, a tech-enabled healthcare company, with sovereign investor Mubadala Investment Company.

AIQ

In 2020 G42 formed a joint venture with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to build AI products for the oil and gas industry. G42 owns 40% of the company and ADNOC owns 60%.[10]

Bayanat

On 14 January 2020, G42 announced the acquisition of Bayanat for Mapping and Surveying Services LLC, an end-to-end and custom provider of geospatial data products and services. The acquisition was said to complement G42's suite of satellite-based services, leveraging its proficiency in data analytics and artificial intelligence methods[11][12][13](pre-existing references x3) Following Bayanat’s 2022 IPO, G42 owns a 77% stake in Bayanat.[14]

  • TXAI: Through Bayanat, G42 runs the TXAI project, the first driverless taxi service in the UAE. The smart mobility project was launched in Abu Dhabi in 2022.[15]
  • Yahsat: Bayanat partnered with Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) in 2023 to develop a UAE space program with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical imagery satellite capabilities. This system assists in urban planning through the detection of land deformation and other issues as part of Abu Dhabi’s smart city infrastructure.[16]

Core 42

Core42 was formed in October 2023 when G42 merged 3 of its entities, G42 Cloud, Injazat and Inception.[17]

Through G42 Cloud, a provider of cloud services for the public and private sectors, G42 has partnerships with GBM,[18] IBM,[19] Nvidia,[20] Cerebras Systems,[21] and SAP.[22]

Injazat was part of Mubadala’s ICT portfolio before in was acquired by G42 in 2020. As part of the deal Mubadala acquired a stake in G42. During the Covid-19 pandemic Injazat's MICloud project migrated Mubadala’s IT services and online servers into the cloud.[23] Injazat successfully developed Malaffi, the region's first Health Information Exchange system.[24]

Inception is a research and development subsidiary focused on AI. In August 2023 G42 released an Arabic language large language model called Jais, in collaboration with Cerebras Systems and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.[25]

Hayat Biotech

Hayat Biotech was formed as a joint venture between G42 and Sinopharm for the life sciences industry.[26] In 2021 Hayat Biotech produced and distributed the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine in the UAE.[27] In 2022 Hayat Biotech signed an agreement with AD Ports Group for distribution and expansion.[28]

Khazna

In 2022 G42 and e& merged their data center services under Khazna Data Centers. The merger created the largest data center provider in the UAE and Middle East. [29]

Presight

A provider of big data analytics solutions, powered by AI, Presight made its IPO in 2023 with G42 as a majority shareholder.[30]

  • Abu Dhabi Accountability Authority: In 2022 the ADAA signed an agreement with Presight to use AI cloud and big data in the entities’ auditing, public finance and anticorruption efforts.[31]

I have streamlined instances with two citations as requested in point 1 wherever the second source does not confirm something missing from the first. This makes it sound as if instances existed where two references were provided with neither of them verifying a particular claim.[a] If that were the case, then definitely they should be removed, but it's important to note that if a reference verifies only a fragment of a sentence — maybe the first half of a sentence— it should be placed at the end of where that information is mentioned in the sentence, after any commas, but before any terminating punctuation. While the Sun is very warm and very large,[1] it is still very far away from the Earth.[2]

In the red text above, there are two references. Together, they each reference something that the other lacks. But they can't be placed together at the end of the sentence. They need to be placed so that one speaks about the Sun's size and its temperature while the other only speaks about its distance. Both are kept in one sentence, but they're placed precisely where they belong so that it's clear which one covers which part specifically. I just want to make sure that's clear with this request.

Found 2 instances where there were still two references where one would do, have removed what I considered the weaker of the the two in each case. Moved any remaining second references to the location of the information they supported which was not confirmed in the other. Looking at this, I'm seeing redlinks for many of these items, which indicates that their subjects are not notable in Wikipedia. In any event, I'm afraid that notability is not really the issue. When I look at the broader sense of these two sections, I get the feeling that they are essentially operating as a directory (the portfolio companies section) and a client list (the partnerships and initiatives section), which are frowned upon in business articles.
