GCA
[edit]- Cround controlled approach. A radar based, last 10 miles approach system for (nearly) blind landing of aircrafts. Two coupled radarsystems building a virtual glide-path/centerline. The air-controller saw the echo of the landing plane on a special scope; The position of the echo over/under the glide path, and left or right of the centerline was reported by the air-controller to the pilot who had to follow these instructions. Since the controller was steadily talking (so called "talk-down") over a one-way radio, the pilot was not able to send during the whole procedure. The system was abandoned middle/end 1970.
