I am not so sure if GUBU refers to Grotesque, Unbelievable, Bizarre and Unprecedented or Grotesque, Unbelievable, Bizarre, Unprecedented; certainly most sources refer to it been the former, with the word "and". Can anyone clarify? Djegan 18:39, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Given that a quick google will tell you that unbelievable comes before unprecedented, and this is stated in the opening sentence; therefore could someone check Dwyer's book - perhaps the person who put it up put it in the wrong order by accident, as the reference only gives a chapter and not a page(s). MacArthur[edit]

John Banville[edit]

This page badly needs expansion[edit]

This article simply recounts the details of the MacArthur scandal but the phrase GUBU while originating in that story came to be used in a broader sense to describe the whole period of Haughey's scandal ridden terms as Taoiseach and covered various other scandals including Haughey's election agent being arrested on personation offences.

Article for MacArthur?[edit]

I think it's time to revisit the question of whether there should be a separate article on Malcolm MacArthur (initially discussed above in 2006). There is this recent Guardian article, just added as a reference, based on the upcoming Mark O'Connell book. One of two books on him (and the scandal) this year that I know of:

The two books in the same year because the trial was 40 years ago? But certainly there's renewed interest in the case/scandal and some will look to see what Wikipedia says.

Alternatively, the separate article could be the murders and connected events of that time, as they may be more notable than MacArthur himself. It was also suggested above that GUBU is/was a broader term encompassing other scandals. Could the GUBU part of this article could be retained and expanded on? There are a number of possibilities here.

And if there was to be a new article, I've seen his surname spelled variously: MacArthur, Macarthur, McArthur. Declangi (talk) 06:44, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
