Reads like a review

This article reads like a review. Brehaut 20:58, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

A) Is that a bad thing? B) It didn't occur to me to write it in a different "style." Seanr451 01:42, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

B) Sorry, that wasn't supposed to sound harsh, i was just very quickly noting something i thought needed revision. I'm half way through the book myself, and am willing to give you a hand to straighten it out etc but dont think im qualified till ive got to the end :P
A) I think it sorta is. this is an encyclopedia after all, adding links to external reviews (when the become available) is probably better. Your recent edit has improved things. I think a large part of the problem with the field of review is that its somewhat personal which is discouraged and also that it is somewhat sales focused. Brehaut 05:21, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
I don't mean to sound "harsh" or anything else either, and I certainly haven't taken offense at what you wrote and didn't mean to imply that I had. As I am new to Wikipedia I appreciate any advice that I receive on how to improve my skills (even if I don't necessarily agree with said advice). However, by definition any article about a book is a review (that's what book reviews are after all, an article about a book by a person who's read said book), so I'm confused as to what you mean by "it reads like a review." To me it appears to be a listing of the merits (both pro and con) about the contents of the book. I feel that I was careful to avoid including any of my personal feelings about said book in the article (which aren't as charitable as you might think). Perhaps if this article sounds unduly positive about this book, maybe it's because it's a good book. Seanr451 15:47, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

What's Missing

I thought I'd point out that the nine subsector map was always the one intended to be published; part of the authors' mandate (I'm one of them) was to focus more closely on an area to support a game rather than the overly large First Imperium. To the best of my knowlege there was never supposed to be an overview map of the area despite the references you mention, but I can't be sure as that would have been in Jon Zeigler's portion of the book.

Feel free to leave any questions on my talk page if you want to clear up this or other issues about the book. Paul Drye 23:14, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

If I recall correctly the most confusing refrences to the map were in the system creation section. I think the correct decision was made in focusing on a smaller area, but it would have been nice to have a map of the First Imperium as well, to show the true scale involved. Something akin to the map in Imperium, perhaps.JBPostma 19:04, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Why does this sentence keep appearing and then being edited out of the article: "There is also no map of the First Imperium, despite some confusing refrences to such a map in the system generation rules." Are we doing childish revert wars here? What are we in grade-school again?

First of all there are no system generation rules. There is a system for generating Main Worlds only, just like there was in Classic Traveller. Secondly, having just read the entire chapter I can tell you that it doesn't refer to a map of the First Imperium. What it refers to is the map of known space, that is the space known to the people of Earth. This is the nine subsectors surrounding Earth.

If you don't like the book that's fine, I'm not very happy with it myself, but please quit adding mistakes about it that simply aren't true. If you think I'm wrong then please include a PAGE NUMBER in your remark. I just read the chapter minutes ago and couldn't find it. Seanr451 00:59, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

First of all, you're right "mainworld generation rules" would be more accurate. Second, the passage that convinces me the author of the section had a different map in mind when he wrote it is on page 96 - "The map of the known universe (p. 100) covers a region of the local arm of the galaxy, about 200 parsecs 'wide' (spinward-to-trailing) and 240 parsecs 'deep' (coreward-to-rimward). This region stretches roughtly from Vland to Terra, and takes in the main body of the Vilani Imperium." The actual map on page 100 measures 24 parsecs wide by 30 parsecs deep and covers only the barest edge of the Vilani Imperium (though it does indeed include Terra). If you have no objection, I'll put the refrence to a missing map back in.JBPostma 01:16, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I do no see the point. The reference on p.96 reads: "The map of the known universe". That's from a Terran POV, so the sector map on p.100 _is_ the known universe of the Terran Confederation. DrTemp 07:44, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
  • The point is that the description on page 96 of the map does not match the actual map on page 100. But fine, if everyone just wants to ignore this mistake then I don't need to have it in the article.JBPostma 20:43, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
