Comments[edit]

The article on BBC news site is misleading, and the consecuences show in the wikipedia article, because the city of Pasto has never been evacuated. The only evacuation done was in certain places around the volcano, near the city. Only 9.400 people were actually evacuated. The Pasto population is 400.000, so it is really out of the line to say that the city has been evacuated. News article related on wikinews (spanish)

Eruption on 14 January 1993[edit]

Bias in this section stems from the fact that it easy to predict an eruption in retrospect. It needs to be completely re-written, complete with citations to claims that Stanley Williams put peoples' lives in danger because this is a serious allegation.

Parts of this section have been pulled from factually inaccurate sentences in the Time article, e.g. measurements had been taken for years, it was not because there was a conference. It is also confusing, e.g. if the volcano has been active for over a million years, it cannot also have been dormant prior to the eruption. JVC (talk) 11:10, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Strange because volcanoes are classed as being Active - meaning "something" is being emitted albeit gases and volatiles or lava and ash, Active - Dormant meaning that the volcano has erupted lava etc., but is now in a period of repose with emissions of gases, Dormant meaning it is known to have erupted lava, gases etc., but is now totally inactive - no gases etc., being vented, or extinct which means that it has not usually erupted within the last 10,000 years. As always though there are exceptions - Yellowstone being one such example. It's last major eruption occurred about 640 ka, so on that basis and that basis alone it would be considered to be extinct. However it would be a foolish statement to claim that the volcano was extinct, it is in fact active - dormant meaning low scale volcanic activity - thermal emissions, geysirs but at the present time the next major eruption is believed to be many years away. There is no guarantee that the precursory activity will not commence today, tomorrow etc.The Geologist (talk) 11:21, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The deaths from the 1993 Galeras eruption led to one of the most energetic controversies in vulcanology. An entire separate article could be written about that controversy, and the books and articles feeding it. Without reading through the entire article history and discussion history, it is hard to tell if that controversy has been avoided or buried in the history of this article. The current phrase "Elements in the media made the event controversial by suggesting... " in the article makes me wonder if this was covered in the past. I've added a reference to Victoria Bruce's book, where you can find all the citations you need.Carl Gusler (talk) 17:04, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a volcanologist I feel that too any people are willing to point the figure at Stanley Williams and I wonder how many have actually any experience. Based upon what we know now we would not have a entered the crater but hindsight is fantastic. At the time the analysis and understanding of Long Period seismic waves and their reason was in its infancy. There was no-one present who knew what the trace meant, the one person who really did - Bernard Chouet, was back in the USA. As with all disasters lessons are learned, tragically they are invariably too late for the injured and dead. The Geologist (talk) 11:21, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To those who want to know much more than these pages give there is a full volume of the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (Vol. 77 - issues 1-4, pages 1-338) devoted entirely to the science of the eruption, the precursory activity. In addition there are two books that relate directly to the eruption - "Surviving Galeras" by Stanley Williams and "No Apparent Danger" by Victoria Bruce. Bruce's book was deeply researched and many of the people involved were interviewed by her, whilst William's book is a personal account. It is best described that the accounts differ of what went on before, during and after the eruption. The reader is left to make up their own mind and I know who I prefer to believe! The Geologist (talk) 14:23, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
