Galit Distel-Etebaryan → ? – Sources are vary on the correct way to spell her last name. What is the correct way to spell her last name?

So what is the correct way? Sokuya (talk) 11:57, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • In terms of what's the most common format:
    • "Galit Distel Etebaryan" 850 hits – this is also the spelling used by the Virtual International Authority File (an international library system)[1] and therefore how she is listed as an author on WorldCat.
    • "Galit Distal Atbaryan" 28 Google hits (comes up as 28,000 initially, but once you get past the first page of hits, there are only three pages worth)
    • "Galit Distel Atbaryan" 8 hits
    • "Galit Distal Etebaryan" 1 hit
As a result, I would suggest no move for now. Also, regarding your reference reformatting, are you aware of WP:CITEVAR? Number 57 13:15, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Galit Distel-EtebaryanGalit Distal-Atbaryan – Knesset's official press release spell it Atbaryan, so the only anomaly is Israel Hayom. Etebaryan is wrong spelling of her last name that based on only 1 source when there are many other RS that spells Atbaryan. https://main.knesset.gov.il/EN/News/PressReleases/Pages/press210421x.aspx Sokuya (talk) 11:27, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose per my comments in the discussion closed five days ago. The current name is the common spelling, with by far the most uses. Contrary to the claim made, Israel HaYom is not the only source that spells it this way – the current spelling is used by Virtual International Authority File and WorldCat. Per WP:NAMECHANGES we should rely on contemporary sources, and nothing more contemporary or offical than the Knesset website or her own social network profiles. Virtual International Authority File and WorldCat automated picked it up from Israel Hayom probably. They didn't verify it or manualy add it to their collection. Sokuya (talk) 11:58, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Three of her four social media profiles don't use the spelling "Distal". Also, I very much doubt VIAF would have picked up the spelling from Israel HaYom; it's more likely that it came from a publisher of her works. How do you know they didn't verify it? Number 57 12:18, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So we can change to Distel-Atbaryan. The Etebaryan is clearly wrong. I know that Facebook requires picture of offical ID or passport in order to get blue badge, so her lead Facebook profile is the most accuracte. Or you suggesting that she can't spell her own name? Sokuya (talk) 17:54, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Given that she's signed up to different social media platforms using different spellings, I would have to conclude the answer is yes. She has a blue tick on Twitter where she's spelt the first part of the surname with an 'e'. Number 57 21:09, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Her Twitter, Instagram (and 1 of the Facebook) are managed by her Knesset team. It's not her personal account like her long time Facebook profile that she manages herself. These accounts opened after she enter office. And still, no Etebaryan. Sokuya (talk) 21:36, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. But still, the only applicable naming guideline I can see here is WP:COMMONNAME (for which 'Etebaryan' is the current winner). There does not seem to be any exception to this if it differs to how a person spells their name. However, I have raised the issue at WT:NCP to see if anyone can confirm this. The result of the move request was: (non-admin closure) MOVED. Consensus is that the new title is how she now spells her name in English, and is also most common in media coverage. Insufficient discussion to assess consensus on whether a hyphen should be present. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 18:49, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Galit Distel-EtebaryanGalit Distel-Atbaryan – The currect way to spell her name, now there's Niqqud added to her native Hebrew name in the article. So this is more proof that Atbaryan is the correct romanization (as her personal and formal Facebook pages, per the Knesset website, per Instagram and other many sources [1] [2] [3]), Etebaryan is not "common name" its a misspelling, that her real name we talking about not nickname or stage name, same real name. so per WP:BLP we should fix the wrong spelling. Google generate 1,290 results for "Galit Distel-Etebaryan" and 4,600 results for "Galit Distel Atbaryan". Niqqud

[edit]

@Sokuya: do you have a source for the niqqud? Modern Hebrew is generally written without them. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 18:55, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't add the Niqqud so I don't have the source. It was added on Hebrew Wikipedia. Sokuya (talk) 11:18, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
