China[edit]

The flags of Tibet and Xinjiang are flags used by the secessionist/autonomist movements there. These are not flags of dependent territories, like the other flags on this page. So they need to be deleted. --82.135.28.22 11:59, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes[edit]

Here are the changes I have made recently:

  • Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin have been added as they are now COMs.
  • French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Reunion have been deleted since they are DOM-ROMs, and a part of France
  • I have moved the Netherlands Antilles to be after Aruba since Bonaire and and the other four islands are part of the Netherlands Antilles.

I object to Redonda, Lord Howe Island, and Rodrigues Island[edit]

The Wiki articles imply that Redonda, Lord Howe, and Rodrigues are integral parts of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, and Mauritius, respectively. Therefore they appear to be the same as Alaska and Hawaii are to the U.S., and Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Reunion are to France. I think, then, that their flags should be deleted. If no one is objecting, I'm deleting all these flags. Inkan1969 (talk) 03:19, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
On the same basis, Easter Island and Juan Fernandez flags should also be deleted, since both are integral parts of Valparaiso Region of Chile. They are thus in exactly the same situation with respect to Chile as, for example, Lord Howe Island is with respect to Australia. Ptilinopus (talk) 15:06, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Australia: ACT/the NT[edit]

I have attempted to add (and failed - own stupidity I do not doubt) the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory to the International "Dependant Territories" flag section. This is because they are theoretically Australian Territories, they certainly are not Australian States, but they definitely do have accepted flags. If someone more knowlegable than I could place them there, that would be great!

Second thing: If i was any good with SVG I would do it myself, but I am not. So if anyone can add the ACT/NT Coats of Arms to the Coats of Arms of Dependant Territories that would also be awesome!! Ithillion (talk) 12:04, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The ACT and the NT are not dependent territories, but territories in a different sense. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 13:06, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Finland: Åland Islands[edit]

This is an autonomous region with special status and it has a flag. Shouldn't this be included? 76.254.28.166 (talk) 05:07, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a dependent territory. CMD (talk) 00:47, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a dependent territory? It is not an independent territory, so it is a dependent one. I don't understand why it is refused here. I don't think that there is a page for autonomous "not dependent" flags. It should be re-placed here Cazaux (talk) 20:30, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comoros[edit]

Why those flags of Comoros Islands here? If those islands are considered dependent territories, there are many other countries that should be treated as well. Cazaux (talk) 20:34, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Crown Dependencies, Bailiwick and Sark[edit]

Apologies if I'm getting this editing wrong. It's my first day :) The status of Sark as an independent jurisdiction which is one of the constituent parts of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is important. Being one of the three parts of the Bailiwick is often confused with being part of the jurisdiction of Guernsey which it emphatically is not. Sark is a separate jurisdiction [1] MikeSarkID (talk) 18:09, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What about Spain and Portugal?[edit]

Spain has the Canary Islands, while Portugal has the Azores and Madeira. They are de facto dependent territories, IMO. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.84.218.4 (talk) 17:30, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the consensus is to go by de jure status, not de facto, when listing dependent territories on Wikipedia. "De facto dependent territories" is something I've never seen defined, and I can imagine what a headache it would be to find a consensus on whether each territory or region counts. French departments[edit]

I am removing the section regarding French departments, as they have exactly the same status as the rest of France, and don't fit any definition of "dependent territory". However, French overseas collectivities can stay, as they have a special constitutional status which might be described as dependency-like. 2A01:E0A:2C1:4260:BCC1:2780:EC53:E4BC (talk) 19:47, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tibet flag[edit]

The Tibet flag

What the Tibet flag is:

What the Tibet flag is NOT:

  • the official flag of Tibet in its current form as the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China (a province-level autonomous region of China, basically a province), which uses the national flag of China (only Hong Kong & Macau are the only subnational divisions to use their own flag as special adminsitrative regions)
  • a flag currently used by any existing sovereign state, subnational division, or dependent territory in the world (a state that actually administrates a polity)

The Tibet flag is a historical flag of the disestablished polity of Tibet (1912-1951). It is not currently in use by any political state in any official form & is outlawed in China. The Government of Tibet Autonomous Region uses the China flag. We do not use historical flags in current gallery, that'd be like including the 13 Colonies flag or the Confederacy flag for the United States, or using the Soviet Union flag or the Qing Dynasty flags - they're flags of disestablished polities. This page is about gallery of flags of current dependent territories, not historically independent territories.

The Tibet flag belongs in Flags of active autonomist and secessionist movements and the historical section of Gallery of sovereign state flags.

The Tibet flag is the flag of the independent sovereign state of Tibet (1912–1951) and is in unofficial use by the Tibetan Government in Exile in India, which does not recognize Tibet as a dependent territory of China, but as a sovereign state as the polity of Tibet. Insisting that the Tibet flag be included in the dependent territories flag gallery argues that Tibet Tibetan Government in Exile sees itself as part of China (as a dependent territory of China), which it absolutely does not.

The flag of a historical sovereign state, now a dependent territory, is not be used as the flag of the dependent territory which is a completely different political entity. It would be like putting the New France flag for the flag of Quebec.

The Tibet flag is the flag of a free, sovereign Tibet, not of Tibet under the People's Republic of China administration (as a dependent territory).

If you insist that flags of former polities can be used in place of their current regimes in the gallery (such as the Tibet flag), then for consistency the flags of the former British Hong Kong flag and Portuguese Macau flag would also have to be displayed in place of the Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR flags of the People's Republic of China, and the pre-Communist Republic of China (1912-1949) flag must be used for China. Recent additions[edit]

@TU-nor: it seems a number of flags that may be covered by your objection of Some of these may be relevant, but the bulk of it consists of fictitious flags, flags of spurious micronations, flags of standard subdivisions etc. etc. Few, if any, are real flags of dependencies. Most, if not all, have been rejected before. Take your suggestions to the talk page, please may have been added. FDW777 (talk) 09:36, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@FDW777: So here we go again, only a few days after protection expired. Well, not quite unexpected. Thanks for pinging me! --T*U (talk) 09:50, 28 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
