Isn't there a difference between a quiz show and a game show? I mean Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is a quiz show, but something like The Price is Right is a game show.

I'd say a quiz show is a type of game show. Bagpuss
Ok what about panel games like What's My Line or Have I Got News For You? do they come under game shows do you reckon? Mintguy
Dunno, but your category idea is pretty good. I think I'll add a "reality TV" section as well though. Bagpuss

To 142.177.82.89 - I don't think the Aussie programme was called Castaways, it may have been renamed that for US audiences though. Anyway I think that was a remake of a Nnorwegian program. Also Big Brother emerged at about the same time (and has been FAR more popular in the rest of the world than the Survivor clones), which was of Dutch origin. I will add more when I've researched it. Mintguy

Right, research is kind of done. I think for the Aussie show Castaway you were thinking of is actually Castaway 2000 which was a British show produced by the BBC, and it wasn't really a game show. IIRC it was more of a social experiment. The Survivor concept is also British in origin. Bob Geldof's TV production company Planet 24 came up with the concept but couldn't get a British broadcaster to put it on, it was eventually taken up by the Swedes as Expedition Robinson in 1997 and spread around the world from there. I will be adding this to this article (and Survivor) soonish unless someone else wants to do it. Mintguy

Definiton of both game and quiz ahows:
game show
n. A television show in which contestants compete for prizes by playing games of knowledge or chance.
quiz show
n. A television or radio program in which the contestants' knowledge is tested by questioning, with some contestants winning money or prizes

So the two things are releated but different thus needs to be serpreated or do a mjor revamp of this article. Pathfinder2006 (talk) 21:49, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I think tbh you're looking for a distinction that may not exist. Hakluyt bean (talk) 15:44, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Can we combine the US and UK list together? There seems to be a lot of overlap. user:J.J.

I think some of the overlaps are errors. A lot of the shows listed under UK shows are not UK shows AFAIK. Mintguy (T) 09:30, 26 Feb 2004 (UTC)I've removed the following shows because they were listed as British and AFAIK they are not. I guess they should be added back as US shows.

--Ghostbusters-- The comment about Bill Murray mentioning 'game show host' is possibly the most uninteresting and irrelevent thing i've seen on Wikipedia 86.134.75.32 11:04, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Scope + major edit?

  • First, I'm not sure listing all the game shows in the world here is a smart move, as the page length will get waaaay out of shape. Secondly, the main article really needs knocking into shape as it's very US-biased (when it should really balance formats from US, UK, Japan with some Australia/NZ, Netherlands etc.) and waffles on about unimportant aspects like scoreboards and the like. Interesting fandom stuff but not really suitable for a short history of game shows. Davidbod 22:45, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
    • I agree with you on these comments, the focus is highly US-centric, and even then it's incomplete. I'm not sure I feel qualified to do it myself, but I will put some clean-up tags on the article. FrozenPurpleCube 15:58, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
  • I just find it a bit redundant that there be a list of game shows on the main page (not to mention wildly incomplete and cumbersome) when there exists a category for the same. I think that it should at least be moved onto its own list page. AOEU Warrior 23:43, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
  • I agree that this article needs major revision. There is no mention, for example, of BBC quiz shows, some of which have been syndicated around the world (for example, The Weakest Link). The article is far too biased towards the USA. Quiz shows are often not game shows, for example, Mastermind is not a game at all - just contestants being asked a series of questions. Another USA bias is shown in the opening section where it says that prizes are provided by the programme's sponsors. This is not the case in the UK (or in other countries around the world). The BBC is not allowed programme sponsors and its money/prizes come from licence fee payer's money. It really needs a major edit - a. to remove the USA bias and b. to stop it being a list of game/quiz shows. Andrew of Ware (talk) 18:39, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

This article is extremely uninformative.

I came here to learn about game shows and all I got is a definition and a lot of lists. There is absolutely nothing about the actual history of game shows. Minaker 19:54, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I agree. Hakluyt bean (talk) 15:24, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Popularity decline and revival

Shouldn't this be included:

"From 2001 to 2006 game shows popularity declined drastically due to the increase of popularity of reality shows. However, in 2007 game shows seem to have a come back, since a lot of discontinued game shows were revived for the new TV season and people as a whole are growing tired of reality shows." 213.240.234.212 10:59, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

BUSY::: THE GOLDEN PARADOX:… these game shows wait for this to be called by scibus, in effect they are tempestuous-conveniences; unable to realise the conformist they centurian: they become dorian-gray-typical-capitalist-nomads | they realise the oratoria-perfection of deus-ex-machina ¦ and like sirens hope for this to become the reason for their unbearable likeness of being, phaelon-negative of real-brother they scintillate Babylonian insurance with mandate INRI waiting for totalitarian SPQR to rescue them from impossible vulcan… —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.139.48.82 (talk) 15:35, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Split section?

The section "Game shows around the world" seems to be taking up a lot of space in this article and could be used on a separate list instead of the main game show article. I have added the {{splitsection}} tag at the beginning of the section. Any thoughts? SchfiftyThree (talk!) 22:32, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

radio and television

'Game show' refers to programmes in both mediums (BBC). In a US context perhaps you have to go back to the era of what people call 'Old Time Radio' to find that usage, but that notwithstanding, game shows aren't confined to television. Hakluyt bean (talk) 15:42, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Popularity of TV game shows around the world

Hi there, I would recommend to add some information about the popularity of TV game shows around the world [1]? Best, Mentalmoses (talk) 18:25, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
