Name[edit]

'Where Thames Smooth Waters Glide' refers to this as Osney Footbridge, but I have a suspicion that this name would apply better to Osney footbridge  linking the two sections of Osney Lane over the railway. Omassey (talk) 16:43, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I too cannot think why this bridge would be called Osney Footbridge - it's not particularly close to Osney. As far as I can see it's called the Gasworks Bridge (with or without "old"). Some examples:
The Environment Agency, p.37, calls it "Road Bridge", which is strange for a footbridge which used to be a railway bridge. A picture in The Erosion of Oxford (1977) (p.117) shows the bridge apparently with a road ramp, so maybe it was a road bridge for a short time.
I have found only one instance of the bridge being called "Osney footbridge" (other than pages obviously derived from WP):
On the other hand "Osney Footbridge" is used of a different bridge (the Osney Lane bridge)
On this evidence, I would rename the page "Gasworks Bridge".--Mhockey (talk) 22:06, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Page now renamed. --Mhockey (talk) 11:15, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
