the how of this[edit]

would it be possable to add a secton explain the resoning behind the gray trangles in this123.211.231.129 (talk) 12:55, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The grey triangle is a graphical representation of the carry. For example, if you are multiplying the digits 4 x 9, the result is 36. The "6" is shown as the number on the strip, and the "3" is represented by a grey triangle that pulls you down by 3 rows, so you are effectively adding 3 to the next column. When I get the time, I'll try to explain this more coherently in the article. Or someone else can. --Worrydream (talk) 06:54, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is an error in the 7 ruler in the 7 section, the arrow should point to the space between the 9 and 0 not between the 0 and 1. Try multiplying 715 by 7 to see. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.57.28 (talk) 14:42, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Easier to use pics[edit]

The pics would be easier to use if they had different shadings for even and odd rows.

error in pictures[edit]

I'm not savvy enough to fix this easily, but I think there's a typo in the pictures. In the rod with 7 at the top, in the 7th box down (numbered 9 through 5), the triangle break happens between the 0 and the 1, when it should happen between the 9 and the 0 as it always does. Using the pictures gives for example 7*172 = 1104 (wrong) instead of 1204. (This is what happens when you try to make these by hand using the pictures) Staecker (talk) 18:15, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see a comment above from 2 years ago about the same issue. I guess nobody wants to fix it? Staecker (talk) 20:57, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK I fixed it- wasn't so hard. Staecker (talk) 13:04, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
