Age Japanese style: explained anywhere in Wikipedia?

[edit]

To say in Japan that someone is X years old is to say that they have entered their Xth year of life (so with this system people are aged one when they are born) whereas in the West we say that someone is X years old when they have completed their Xth year.

Is there anywhere in the English Wikipedia where this is explained?

This is information important for the correct interpretation of historical articles about Japan which give age information, such as this one.

Editing

[edit]

I am editing this article in my sandbox. Addition of a content box and clearly delineated subject matter was used increase the quality of this article. Provided an organized directory for readers. I specifically delineated sections on general ceremony format, formats specific to time periods, and modern day equivalents. New content will include, as deemed necessary, an elaboration of etymology, what members of the population participated during certain time periods and why, the significance of ceremonial clothing/ the ceremony itself, and the transitional importance between child statuses and adulthood. I found a lot more sources as well. Beckalinageorge (talk) 04:39, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Major Edit

Hello all! As part of the Global Youth Studies Project, I have been making some major revisions to this article. Please let me know what you think and feel free to offer feedback! Beckalinageorge (talk) 16:17, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! I was looking forward to seeing what you did with it, and you didn't disappoint. BenedictineMalediction (talk) 23:17, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Chronological organization

[edit]

As a result the previously mentioned "adolescent phase" vanished once more, but would reappear in the Muromachi Period.

Confused chronological order--the Muromachi Period comes before the Tokugawa, not after. I didn't edit this section because you're working from sources I don't have, but perhaps you could correct this?

Also, it would be more effective to create a new section on the Tokugawa Period and move the relevant material from "Age of the Samurai" into it, in order to improve the sense of change across time. BenedictineMalediction (talk) 23:16, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good Idea, Thanks!

[edit]

I can see how the section headings make the chronological order unclear. I will work on this as soon as possible. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Beckalinageorge (talk) 22:40, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
