This article was the subject of an educational assignment in Spring 2015. Further details were available on the "Education Program:Louisiana State University/GEOL 4131: Basin Studies (Spring 2015)" page, which is now unavailable on the wiki.
This article is in need of a complete rewrite. It has various issues, but I'll just highlight that the word "coal" does not appear once, despite Upper Carboniferous coals being the source rock for all the gas in the basin. It needs a section on Early Carboniferous extension, which created the basins in which the thick coal deposits were formed. I have no idea if I'll get round to this soon, but I'll try.
