Should Add Overall Style & Subject Matter & Illustration Work
[edit]Bellows expertly took real life, urban life and presented it in modernist form. He didn't paint aristocracy or wildly wealthy subjects. He painted gritty, urban city life with bold, broad paint strokes. To call him a realist is a bit of a stretch as his work was seen as a departure from traditional forms of realist painting of the centuries prior... bordering on abstraction with sweeping movements and geometric shapes. He's more like Hopper and Sargent than any of the previous century realists of the Hudson Valley School. Many of his lithographs and small painting use exceptional light to highlight the subject, something he used expertly in his magazine illustrations. --Possum4all (talk) 11:02, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Stag at Sharky's
[edit]Stag at Sharky's This work should be added and quite possibly have it's own page (linked) as it is considered Bellow's masterpiece. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.172.16.195 (talk) 09:28, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- I totally agree. It is the centerpiece of his recent exhibit at the National Gallery in DC and was a bold painting of movement and expression for early 1900s. --Possum4all (talk) 10:54, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

- I've replaced it with File:George Bellows Builders of Ships.jpg; the deletion nom at Commons was that the other one was a lower res version. postdlf (talk) 22:02, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- Not sure why it should be deleted/replaced, as it fits the criteria for public domain.--Chimino (talk) 00:55, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- It was just because it was a lower resolution version of the same image, not because the content it represented wasn't public domain. But they really should have replaced all uses of the original image with the higher res one before listing it for deletion. postdlf (talk) 02:55, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Gallery
[edit]we dont want large galleries here unless they are of individually notable works. a link to the commons is better than a gallery.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 21:53, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
