torque converter

[edit]

The torque converter is little known today but may have relevance in modern mechanisms including the new area of nano scale mechanisms. It is really a reciprocating force converter using an inertia (the pendulam bob) which could equally be a spring. Tho output reciprocating motion is taken from the pivot of the pendulum while the input drive is connected part way down the pendulum link, which must have bending strength. When the output resistance is low, the bob stays nearly stationary and the output stroke is equal to or greater than the input stroke. When the output is loaded, the bob swings and the output stroke is much less than the input stroke but the energy stored in the pendulum is available to reinforce the next stroke (within a frequency band). Thus the range of gearing without the use of gears. In the car the reciprocating motion was converted to and from torque by cranks and ratchets. The device did not survive in car design but may find a new lease of life in small mechanisms. The essential elements can be achieved by flexural pivots, avoiding bearings.Profstandwellback (talk) 12:09, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic engine

[edit]

What is a sonic engine? I have tried a Google search but most results relate to Sonic the hedgehog. Biscuittin (talk) 11:44, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is it a Thermoacoustic heat engine? Biscuittin (talk) 14:02, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There is also Rijke tube. Biscuittin (talk) 14:13, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sonic asynchronous motor. [1] Biscuittin (talk) 14:20, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think the term "sonic engine" probably refers to a sonic motor, i.e. not a prime mover. Biscuittin (talk) 13:38, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to 4 external links on George Constantinescu. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}).
